Assignment for Friday, Oct 23

  • Do the exercises on the Class Notes as preparation for Monday's test.

LATIN 101: SECOND TEST

You should be able to:

·         Give all the forms of any first, second or third declension noun or adjective

·         Give the present, imperfect and future tense of any verb we have had so far (including 3rd, 3rd-io, and 4th).  This means you should also be able to recognize what conjugation verbs are from their dictionary form.

·         Be able to give full dictionary form of any vocabulary word you see in a Latin reading passage, along with its meaning as used in the sentence.

·         Be able to tell the gender, number and case of any vocabulary word (nouns only) we have had so far.

·         Be able to tell what case word a sentence requires from clues like:

o    adjective agreement

o    case following a preposition

o    need for a direct object or subject or subject complement

o    need for verb to agree with subject

o    uses of genitives and datives

o    NOTE this includes demonstrative adjectives and pronouns

·         Be able to read all the demonstrative adjectives and pronouns in sentences and translate them correctly.  Also, be able to recognize what gender, number and case they are.  (is, ea, id; hic, haec, hoc; ille, illa, illud; iste, ista, istud; eidem, eadem, idem)

The test will have these parts:

·         Vocabulary: Dictionary form and meaning in sentence from a reading passage, possibly plus a matching set like those in the Wednesday Class Notes.  Vocabulary will be from chapters 7-11.

·         Paradigms: Things like: give the forms of tempus, temporis, n; or give the future tense of venio, -ire, etc.)  You will NOT be expected to complete paradigm charts of the demonstrative adjectives and pronouns.

·         Gender, Number, Case: Be able to give the gender, number and case of nouns that are underlined in a passage.  These will be nouns from our vocabulary lists from chapter 1-11.

·         Changes (change the following nominative nouns into the ablative case, accusative case, whatever; change the following verbs into the future tense, etc.)

·         Uses:  Multiple choice questions testing things like adjective agreement, objects of prepositions, verb agreement, using commands and infinitives, which case to use, which pronoun to use.

·         Translation: A connected passage divided up into sentences.  For this, you will have a brief introduction to situate you, and usually some extra vocabulary words defined; give me as much as you can of everything, even if you are not sure, and when you are confident, be as precise as you can about singulars, plurals and tenses.

·         NOTE:  The vocabulary and gender-number-case sections will be taken from the reading passage.  In other words, any effort you put into reading to figure out meanings or cases etc., will pay off when you do the translation.  You may want to consult the extra vocabulary words given before the translation to help you with meanings in the earlier sections of the test.

Vocabulary chapters 7-11: all the vocab you should know the dictionary forms of, for the test.
