Escuelas Unitarias Grading Policies
Escuelas unitarias are divided into three levels. The corresponding primary grade levels are as follows:
Level I
|
First and Second Grades
|
Level II
|
Third and Fourth Grades
|
Level III
|
Fifth and Sixth Grades
|
- Students may complete a level in one year, or spend two years or more in each level.
- A student may enroll at any time during the school year.
- Students in the regular escuelas unitarias program study four subjects, which are called areas. These are: Spanish, mathematics, natural sciences and social sciences in Levels I and II. In Level III history and geography replaces social sciences. Students enrolled in the escuelas unitarias Indigenous Program study the same four areas plus Indigenous Language.
- The grading scale is from 5 (failing) to 10.
- Report cards are distributed four times during the school year. There are no specific dates.
- Partial grades and the final evaluation (examination) are expressed as whole numbers.
- The student will receive a grade for the final evaluation (examination), and annual general average when he or she is eligible to be promoted to the next level. If the student is promoted to the second year of the same level, the spaces for final evaluation (examination) and annual general average will be cancelled.
- The final grade for each area is calculated by adding the partial grades and final evaluation (examination) and dividing the result by five (or by six if the student is in the Indigenous Program). This will be expressed as a whole number and a decimal.
- The student passes an area when he or she achieves a final grade greater than or equal to 6.0 and passes the final examination.
- The student will be promoted to the second year of the same level when he or she has completed one year in that level.
- The student will be promoted to the next level when he or she has achieved the following:
-
- A final grade, which includes the partial grades plus the examination, greater than or equal to 6.0 in Spanish, mathematics, and indigenous language, where applicable.
- An annual general average of 6.0 or greater
- A minimum age depending on the level
- The student will fail if he or she has completed two or more years at the same level, has achieved a grade of less than 6.0 on the final evaluation in the areas of Spanish, mathematics, or the indigenous language where applicable, or has an annual general average of less than 6.0.
