Types of Middle Schools
-
General Secondary--academic, high school preparatory
-
Technical Secondary--the equivalent of general secondary, but with sufficient vocational classes to prepare students for entry-level jobs in industry, agriculture, fishing, or forestry
-
Telesecundaria--classes transmitted via satellite to adolescents in remote areas--One or two teachers monitor the telecasts and serve as liaison.
-
Workers Secondary Schools and other adult education options for persons more than 16 years old--Workers' Secondary Schools (Secundarias para Trabajadores) require the same curriculum as regular secondary, but students may study at their own pace and present final examinations for course credit on an individual schedule. The National Institute for the Education of Adults, (Instituto Nacional de Educación de Adultos) INEA, offers classes leading to an elementary or secondary diploma as well as job training.
Adults also may work toward a secondary diploma in Centers for Basic Education for Adults (Centros de Educación Basica para Adultos, or CEBA), Centers for Non-Formal Education (Centros de Educación Extraescolar, or CEDEX), and Cultural Missions (Misiones Culturales, or MC). These centers are decentralized, but are regulated and supervised by the SEP. Credit is by examination, and the curriculum focuses on core subject areas: Spanish, mathematics, social studies, and science.
