UBEDA PART 3

LAS VACACIONES DEL SR. FRIJOL
May 29

After voting in class for a movie to watch at the movie theater, we watched "Mr. Bean's Vacations" in Carrefour.  The movie was funny but it had a lot of French in it since it takes place in Paris.  Carrefour is Ubeda's largest supermarket. You can find everything from food to clothing and electronics, kind of like Wal - Mart.  They also have a movie theater inside with 4 different theaters.

BAEZA
May 30

We visited Ubeda's twin city, Baeza. Located only 20 minutes away from Ubeda by bus, Baeza is just as beautiful as Ubeda. It was included as well in the Unesco list of W
orld Heritage sites. This ancient city dates back to the Moorish occupation in the 9th century, and to the Reconquista in the 13th century. In the 16th century the city was reformed according to the emerging Renaissance style.
We also visited "La universidad Vieja" which was built in 1542 and was converted into a school in 1875. At the beginning of the 20th century, the famous writer Antonio Machado used to teach French in the university.  We also met Mariu, Tera's convesation partner who lives in the city.  She showed us her brother's restaurant, which is a beautiful palace from the 16th century.  We all had some tapas and a drink at the restaurant.

FREE WEEKEND
June 1 & 2

All students decided to go to Benalmadena- Málaga during their free weekend.  During that weekend I went to Madrid to pick up Jeremy (my husband) who spent the last 2 weeks of the program with us.  The students had a wonderful time at the beach. They were delighted at how how cheap and beautiful their ocean front hotel was.   Jeremy and I also had a great time in Madrid. However, it was quite a different experience. As soon as we got out of the metro at La puerta del Sol we witnessed a huge protest against Bush, the war in Iraq and Condoleezza Rice.  It is worth to mention that the protest was not violent at all, people were expressing their ideas aloud and carrying all kinds of pamphlets.

SACRA CAPILLA DEL SALVADOR, MUSEO SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ & MIRADOR
June 5

Even though we have seen the outside of  La Capilla del Salvador, Ubeda's most representative building, today we paid to go inside and see it in detail.  After seeing the chapel we walked towards one of the many gorgeous miradores "Overlooks" in the city which opens up to an ocean of olive trees. What a gorgeous view!  It is like nothing we have in the States or Latin America. After the Mirador we visited El Museo de San Juan de La Cruz.

Homesick?

Having fun!

Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz)  was a major figure in the Catholic Reformation (mid 1500 - late 1500's), a Spanish mystic and Carmelite friar born at Fontiveros, a small village near Ávila.

He is renowned for his cooperation with Saint Teresa of Avila in the reformation of the Carmelite order, and for his writings; both his poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul.

The museum in Ubeda was built to host his body because he died in Ubeda.

TAYLOR'S BIRTHDAY
June 6

Today's we celebrated Taylor's Birthday at Tera's host family home. ¡ Feliz cumpleaños Taylor! There was a lot of yummy food.  Taylor received a flamenco dress as her birthday present.  She really wanted one because she loves flamenco and she is serious about learning it.  I am sure she will become very good at it.  She also bought flamenco shoes after our flamenco-sevillanas class so she is good to go.

My favorite "Caracoles" (snails) :  It is the most common tapa in Ubeda.  I had them everyday. They are delish.

MARIA DEL MAR Y JAVIER (Tera's Host family)

Tera's family was fantastic.  They had some of the students, Jeremy and me over in 2 different occasions.  They are super nice, their home is beautiful and their food fantastic!.  Their dog "Pili" is a lot of fun.  One of my fondest memories was the night Taylor and Tera cooked Mexican food for their families and I was invited.  It was so funny to see them trying to figure out how to eat the tortillas with the fillings.  Also, they did not know you could put a lime in your corona.  Once Javier tried it, he really liked it and he had after another, after another.
