UBEDA PART 4
SABIOLINA (Olive oil factory) & SABIOTE
June 7
The Jaén province is one the major olive oil producers in Spain and in the world. Therefore, I thought it was very important to visit an almazarra (an olive oil factory) to see how olive oil is made. It was difficult to find one that would give us a tour since it was not the season for making oil. After several attempts, Isabel found one that was willing to show us the whole facility for free. What a deal! The factory's name is Sabioliva and it is in Sabiote, which is about 10-15 minutes from Ubeda. The process is incredibly involved. The tour itself lasted about 2 hours and it takes about 6 months to produce a bottle of olive oil. Of course thousands are produced at the same time. After the factory we visited the ruins of an old castle in the town of Sabiote. That same evening we had our going away party with the conversation partners. My students performed some very funny skits. One of the funniest ones was Joe's and Trevor's which was about a jealous husband who calls his servant and asks him to kill his wife who is supposedly cheating with another man. The servant puts his master on hold, goes to the lady's bedroom and kills the wife as requested and after retuning to the phone his master instructs him to put the dead body in the pool. Trevor says with a heavy British accent, "but sir, there is no pool in this house", oops it must be the wrong number then. After the skits, the conversation partners gave my students a t-shirt, Carlos, Trevor's conversation partner designed himself. They also received three beautiful coffee mugs with a comic strip from the Sunday newspaper. I also received a wonderful present and surprise, a small digital camera to replace my old one which my students called "the brick" because they thought it was a big, heavy camera. The students also got a certificate for participating in the conversation partners program. What a special evening! Everyone was happy! |
