SEVILLA - CORRIDA DE TOROS (Bullfight)
June 10
Sevilla's
logo or sign is NO8DO. It is a play on words. The figure eight represents a
skein of wool, the Spanish word for which is madeja.
On either side of the madeja are the letters NO and DO. Together
they are read, NO (madeja) DO, or No me ha dejado, meaning "she
has not deserted me". "She has not deserted me" were the words reputedly uttered by Alfonso X (the Wise), after Seville remained loyal to him in the course of a dispute with his son Sancho during the 13th century Reconquest of Spain. |

SEVILLA DOWNTOWN TOUR
June 11
We took a wonderful tour of the city in the morning. We had an excellent tour guide. We visited El barrio de la juderia (The old Jewish quarters) and the Cathedral. Sevilla's Cathedral is according to our guide, the oldest gothic building and the third largest cathedral in the world. It was built (in the 15th-16th centuries) around the old Moorish Grand Mosque. In the afternoon we went to El parque Maria Luisa where we rented bikes and rode around. In the evening we took an hour boat tour on the Guadalquivir river. It was a surprise to the students. Sevilla is a very interesting city, a combination of old and modern. The most modern buildings were built for World Expo in 1992. |
