(4/26) - Next week we will discuss the final set of readings on learning and I will discuss the format of the mini-conference on May 3, 2003 and your final presentations

(4/10) - Next week we will discuss the readings on measuring performance.  There will be no class on Tuesday 4/22.  See the revised course schedule.

(4/3) - On Tuesday (4/8) we will discuss both sets of readings on the diffusion of innovations.  We will also discuss your written assignments on this topic.

(3/24) - On Tuesday (3/25) we will discuss the readings on public participation and begin discussing some of the readings on dispute resolution.  Be sure you have read reserve reading #19 on the Quincy Library group and have gotten through the first couple of chapters of #20.  You will have the second half of class to work on your group project.  Next week we will finish the dispute resolution readings and start discussing the diffusion of innovations readings.

(3/14) - Class is canceled on Tuesday (3/18) as I will be in Washington DC.  I suggest you use the time to work on the final group project.  The following week we will discuss the readings on public participation and dispute resolution.

(2/26) - Next week we will look at the role of science in the policy process and focus on some of the challenges of integrating science and politics.  Read these handouts for next class as well (Handouts #1, Handouts #2). We will also talk about the problems of managing engineers and scientists.

(2/12) - Next week we will finish our discussions of the topic searching for solutions to problems since we went the the hearing instead.  We will also discuss the readings on policy tools and other practical challenges.  Your written assignment for the policy tools section is also due.  At the beginning of class you should be prepared to update me on the group projects, particularly the NPDES projects as they are in the home stretch.

(1/31) - Next week we will discuss some of the ways planners/analysts search for solutions to problems and will spend most of our time discussing the readings lesson drawing and the uses of history.  You will also be asked to report on the progress of your group projects

(1/21) - Tracie's PowerPoint Presentation on NPDES Phase II requirements (Draft).  Model Permit and other documents provided by Tracie are now on the group project page.

(1/17) - Reminder that your interview with a planner assignment is due next class.  We will begin class by discussing your group projects and having you brief me.  We will discuss your interviews and the readings on reflective practice in the second half of class.

(1/8) - Welcome to PLS 520.  I will periodically post announcements on the web site and send them by email.  Please check the class web site and your email frequently as the course schedule may change.

(1/8) - Our first class is Tuesday (1/14).  The syllabus is now posted and you can download a copy by clicking here.  The reserve readings should be available by Friday (1/10) in the library and a packet of reserve readings is also available to  check out over night for copying.
