Film Critique (Memo #4)

For this assignment, you are required to watch the new film Day After Tomorrow.  It can be argued that the film was made to advance a political agenda and increase the public's awareness of global warming.  Others counter that it is a classic example of environmentalists overstating their case.  Fir this assignment, write a critique of the film in terms of whether you think it is an example of environmentalists overstating their case.  More specifically, I want you to argue whether or not you think the film is helpful to those that seek to elevate the issue of global warming on the agenda of governmental decisionmakers.  When critiquing the film, it may be helpful to consider some of the following questions:
bulletDid the film help elevate the issue of global warming on the public agenda?
bulletDid the film raise the issue on the political agenda?
bulletHow was the film be used by policy entrepreneurs (e.g., environmental organizations, selected politicians, scientists, etc.) and by policy sabateurs (e.g., industry, global warming cynics, etc.)
bulletHow does the film portray various actors in the policy process such as scientists, environmentalists, and politicians?  Are these positive or negative stereotypes?
bulletWhat message are the film makers trying to send?  How do they use imagery and the characters to send this message?
bulletIs fictionalizing a real problem like global warming good or bad?  Do they run the risk of actually weakening the political arguments for proponents of policy changes to address the problem of global warming?
Hemple's book Environmental Governance should be of some assistance in preparing this assignment as it includes a discussion of the politics of global warming.  The readings on the policy process in both books will also be of some assistance.  Additional readings and handouts are contained on the topics pages for global warming and the policy process.  You can also download the some articles that I collected on the movie.
