Assignment 5:

You are going to Japan as an exchange student and have been assigned a conversation partner of a Japanese student, who is supposed to spend some time with you and help you have a smooth transition to your life in Japan. You wrote him an e-mail, asking the following:

家はどんな所にありますか。　うちの近くに駅や商店街はありますか。近くに大きな町はありますか。　家からそこまでどうやって行けますか。　また、お便りください。　よろしくお願いします。

ふとん屋　futon store、すませる　to complete an errands, shopping, etc.、　ため due to, because of, （安売り店の進出のため　Due to a discount store’s making into the market）、例（たと）えば for example、高速道路 highway、電気代 electricity charge/utility cost、１ＤＫ one room with dining kitchen、保証人 guarantor, person who guarantee the credibility of another person and will be responsible for the payment when the person is no longer able to make a payment、3倍から5倍 from three to five times、問題がありません no problem、返ってくる to be returned、お金 money

家の近くには西明石といいます駅があります、その南に小さい商店街があります。商店街にはふとん屋、子供服店、薬局屋、などの専門店があります、食料品や日用雑貨の買い物はダイエーといいます大型店ですませます。　以前、商店街には果物屋、八百屋、魚屋、肉屋などの食料品や日用雑貨を扱いますお店がたくさんありますんですが、大型安売り店の進出のためほとんどの客が安い大きい方の店で買い物をするようになったため、ほとんどの町で商店街は小さいなったりなくなってしまったりしています。

母がアメリカに来ました時にびっくりしましたことの一つは、アメリカの方が物の値段がずっと安いことです。例えば、日本の方が安い物もありますが、肉、果物、野菜などの食料品はアメリカの方がずっと安いと言っていました。これは、食料品のほとんどが輸入にたよっているからでしょう。　それに運送費や交通費も日本ではとても高い、以前、韓国人の友達が日本に来ました時に、電車で移動します交通費がとても高いのに驚いていました。それから、車で旅行する場合、高速道路には料金所がたくさんあります、トラックでの輸送も高いなります。

それから、アパートの家賃や電気代も日本の方が狭い高いようです。私の友達が住んでいますアパートは１DKで一ヶ月6万円ぐらいです。アパートを借りる場合、日本では日本人の保証人が必要で、その上、敷金や礼金など、アパートの家賃の3倍から５倍ぐらいの料金が最初に必要なります。　敷金はアパートに問題がありません（と、ば、なら、たら、？）返ってきますが、礼金は不動産屋へのお礼のお金なので返ってきません。

Assignment 6:

Suppose, you have become a conversation partner of a Japanese student, who is coming to your university and needs to find an apartment near the university. You are supposed to spend some time with him and help the student to have a smooth transition to his life in the U.S. Your Japanese partner wrote you an e-mail, asking the following questions. Now, after reading and knowing the differences between the life in Japan and the U.S., write the Japanese student to introduce the life in the U.S. and offer some suggestions if necessary to get him ready to live in the U.S. (You can write a very similar letter as you read above.)

初めてお便りします。　私の名前は加藤（かとう）といいます。　アメリカには8月の中旬に来て、留学生活を楽しみにしています。　アメリカで住むアパートを探したいんですが、どのあたりがいいか教えてください。　そのアパートの近くに歩いていける商店街やショッピングセンターはありますか。　また、家賃や一ヶ月の生活費はどのくらい必要だと思いますか。　教えてください。　よろしくお願いします。
