Story Assignments
A note about Manuscript Requirements
S1 News feature | Due Feb 07
Write a feature intended for a newspaper. It may draw upon recent “straight” news (follow-up), currently published research or surveys (overview, medical, explanatory, or business story), an annual event or anniversary (commemorative story) — anything with human interest, emotional appeal or comic relief. Longer features tend to be more serious than shorter ones.
S2 Service or how-to article | Due Feb 28
Do you have a knack for explaining how to waterproof a wooden canoe? About the newest lacrosse gear? The 20 “musts” for travelers to Bhutan? The ten stupidest smugglers? If so, the how-to or service article should come easily and be fun in the process. “Show, don’t tell” is especially important here. Keep it focused, lively and highly sourced: an article about the “ten people to avoid on a cruise” could cite five or six different expert sources.
S3 Profile | Due Apr 03
Write a profile of someone your readers would like to know, a three-dimensional portrait. Do plenty of interviews (five or ten) and bring colorful anecdotes, traits and voices to life.
S4 Long magazine feature | Due by 7 p.m., May 06 (tentative)
The course capstone. This article should be an in-depth, serious, highly polished piece elaborating a theme. It could be investigative or expository. This feature should integrate numerous interviews that complement the documentary sources and provide opportunity for narrative. I’ll be happy to discuss your article’s progress with you by appointment.
