Assignments from Previous Classes |
Preparation for
Thursday, Oct, 27
- Homework:
Finish scanning and translate the Martial epigrams we did
not do in class. All are given with notes in our text, so you
might consult there for notes.
- Quiz on
chapter 33 vocabulary, and on a few more volo, nolo and malo
phrases.
- Continue with the Catullus 5 reading if
you have not finished it. I will ask for phrases from it,
something like progressive reading style, and we will practice
reading aloud a little. Maybe listen to some recorded versions
(some pretty funny).
- For the Cimon reading in Chapter 33,
begin constructing your own progressive reading.
- Begin with verb and (if there is one
stated) subject.
- Add in small elements one by one (e.g.
adjectives, genitives, adverbs, etc.)
- For separate clauses (e.g. relative
clauses), begin a new sentence. Begin by writing it as a
sentence: for example, "quem puella amat" might begin as puella amat
== puella eum amat == quem puella amat == poeta quem puella amat ...
etc.
Preparation for
Tuesday, Oct, 25
- Homework:
Conditional Sentences
Work with the
Conditional
Sentences Explanation sheet.
-
Class notes
- Continue with the scansion and
translation of Catullus cenabis bene (which we have gone over, so
remind yourself of it and know why it means what it does) and
Catullus 5, vivamus mea Lesbia.
- In class, we will prepare your very own
progressive reading of the Cimon passage in ch. 32. So begin
that, focusing on fundamental things like subjects, verbs, and
adjectives, and being sure you know where one clause ends and the
next begins ...
- Quiz on chapter 32 vocabulary, and on
translating forms of nolo and volo in brief sentences
- Reading:
Flash Cards for Adverbs (coming eventually)
Class Plan for
Thursday, Oct, 13
- You will just have to guess.
- No, seriously, bring in the progressive
reading I assigned for class work last time, as homework this time.

-
Homework due: two
verb synopses. Here's the form. The top space in
each category is for the Latin, the bottom space is for the
English meaning.
- Class Preparation: Progressive Reading of
Recapture of Tarentum. You can consult the book notes but will have to
part from their translations. This looks like a lot but it
is really about 7 sentences that you repeat over and over again,
adding an element each time. (Sort of like writing on the
board 100 times, I am a boy. I am a bad boy. I am
a very bad boy. I am a very very bad boy. I know I
am a very very bad boy. And so on. Probably very
archaic of me, probably no one has to do this any more, and you
have no idea what I'm talking about.) Before you do the
translation, go through the Hannibal Vocablulary 2 flash
cards above. They give most of the significant words in
the reading, both in their dictionary form (which you need for
the quiz) and in the form they occur in the reading (makes the
reading easier for you.)
- Quiz on Chapter 32 vocab and Hannibal review vocab 4 I will give you 11 words, Latin to Englsih, and
drop one.
- Review adjective and adverb
comparisons
- Study adverb vocabulary for class
drill
- Review Fero drill. We didn't
do it last time because I forgot the candy. I will
probably remember Tuesday. I will take email requests:
Hershey's kisses, mini reese's peanut butter cups, or bite-size
snickers and Milky Way, or a combination of all? Emails
must be received by Monday 2 pm.
- Try scanning the elegaic couplets of
Martial posted on the scansion class notes page.
Class Plan for Tuesday, Sept.

MIDTERM
Misc. midterm review
(to be updated during the day
(Wed.) so check back)
- Verb
translation with explanation of answers

with explanations
- Multiple choice with explanations
- Sentences
of different sorts for identification and (perhaps) translation.
This is an exercise I did for a class with more vocabulary than you have
had, to work on material (grammar etc.) you have done. So don't worry
too much about the translation, just work on recognizing the sentence type.
For an overview of the test:

flash cards using vocabulary from this exercise.
-
Review: review in principio.
I will give you a brief section of it to translate in class (written) at the
beginning of the period. You will turn this in but not receive a grade
-- it's diagnostic for me.
-
Translation for class (chapter
28): Martial 7.3, Martial 6.11, Isidore of Seville, Origines 5.30. I
expect these to be difficult and analytical. Especially with the
longer reading, read for sense rather than translating word ofr word.
Skip parts that are confusing and return to them when you have a better
sense of context. This is classwork we will review at the beginning of
class rather than work to turn in.
-
Study the vocabulary cards linked above
under prep for Tuesday.
-
Consult the
genitive review and go over
the genitive flash cards .
We will do these and compose variations of them in class.
Flash cards for genitive phrases
determine which word is genitive, and translate accordingly. Note:
because there is no context the translations are rather stilted, using
"the," but something like amici casam could be "my friend's house" or "his
friend's house" rather than "the friend's house."
Class Plan for Thursday,
