Issue Memo Assignments

Directions:

Over the course of the semester we will discuss 8 controversial policy issues.   Each of these readings is on reserve in the library and is designed to help you explore the various theories and concepts discussed in the readings and lectures.  Each assignment is a little different so be sure to follow the directions.  You can find the directions by clicking on the appropriate link:

Issue Memo Assignment #1: "Issue 6: Do Environmentalists Overstate their Case?"
Issue Memo Assignment #2: "Issue 4: Should Environmental Policy Attempt to Cure Environmental Racism?"
Issue Memo Assignment #3: "Issue 16: Is Limiting Population Growth a Key Factor in Protecting the Global Environment?"
Issue Memo Assignment #4: "Issue 14 Municipal Waste: Is Recycling an Environmentally and Economically Sound Waste Management Strategy?"
Issue Memo Assignment #5: "Issue 5: Is the Precautionary Principle a Sound Basis for Environmental Policy?"
Issue Memo Assignment #6:  "Issue 15: Nuclear Waste: Should the United States Continue to Focus Plans for Permanent Nuclear Waste Disposal Exclusively at Yucca Mountain?"
Issue Memo Assignment #7: "Issue 12: Do Human Activities Threaten to Change the Global Climate?"
Issue Memo Assignment #8: "Issue 9: Is Genetic Engineering an Environmentally Sound Way to Increase Food Production?"

Each reading contains arguments for and against each policy proposal.  Based on these and other class readings, handouts, lecture notes, guest speakers, videos, and other web sites, each assignments will generally require that you develop an argument for or against a specific policy proposal.  You should be prepared in class to discuss your proposals and the points made by the authors in each reading.

Written Assignments

Generally, your writing assignments will take the form of a memo.  In some cases, you may be asked to write your analysis in another form such as a letter or opinion editorial.  Each memo is limited to 2 single-spaced, 12 point font pages, with 1 inch margins and must be in a standard memo format.  A sample of an acceptable memo format is available for download and most word processing software has templates for memos.  The reason that a memo format is required is that it is the standard means of communication in the world of business and government.  Thus, these memo assignments will help you to develop your ability to analyze policy questions and to think, act, and communicate more effectively about environmental issues and problems.

Grading

You must do at least 5 assignments.  However, if you wish to improve your class grade you can do additional assignments and I will take your best 5 of  8 grades.  Each memo should answer the question posed and be argumentative in nature.  There is no one "right" answer.  Instead, you will be graded on the strength and organization of your arguments as well as the quality of your writing.  You may introduce any facts and evidence you wish to support your arguments.  If you are unfamiliar with how to write a memo please arrange to see me or my graduate assistant during office hours for assistance.
