Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is a simple one. I believe that learning occurs best when students become an active part of the learning process. It is my job as a teacher, to create a learning environment that encourages students to be active listeners and learners. There is no room for passivity in learning, especially at the high cost of time and money for an education today. My approach is to enter the classroom to present students with thought provoking course content that allows for useful interpretations of their own behavior and experiences while cultivating a lively sense of discussion and inquiry within the classroom.Students should understand that the responsibility for learning is not solely on the shoulders of the teacher, but they (students) share that responsibility by coming to the classroom prepared, completing outside assignment, asking thoughtful questions and opening up their minds to learning new skills and information while being critical and creative thinkers.
I strive to connect what is learned in the classroom to the outside world as often as possible. Application of learning is one of my most important teaching goals. I often bring my own personal work world experiences as a communicator and manager into the discussion with students, to serve as examples and illustrate what has worked or what has not worked. I believe that this approach toward active learning and application has helped me to educate students about communicating in a way that will help change their lives in meaningful ways.
