Goals and Requirements
Goals
- To master the essentials of Latin grammar and vocabulary;
- To gain confidence in reading Latin prose;
- To learn strategies for approaching complex material, in this case a foreign language,
with mental flexibility;
- To explore Roman history and attitudes as expressed through their language;
- To gain perspective on the ways in which our own language and culture have been affected
by the Romans' language and culture.
Requirements
- YOU MUST HAVE INTERNET ACCESS AND AN E-MAIL ACCOUNT
to participate fully in this
course. Most of the homework exercises are only available on the Internet, and some of the
assignments for daily work depend on Internet access and email transmission. If you do not
have a computer at home, you will need to make time to do your Latin work at a campus
computer cluster. If you do not have an email address, see me; UNC-W provides all students
with email access.
- Quizzes (40%). There will be a quiz every day beginning Jan. 18. Quizzes can only be
made up with prior notice. Four quiz grades will be dropped.
- Translations and Internet (15%). 10 times during the semester (5 times before spring
break, 5 times after), email me 8-10 lines of translation from that days assignment,
by 8:30 AM the day the assignment is due. I will reply with your
grade for the assignment. If you like, you may send up to three additional translations
whose grades will replace your three poorest translation grades. Five times during the
semester, send me a paragraph describing an Internet site having to do with ancient Rome
or the Latin language. These assignments will be ungraded but must be completed. If your
description is not sufficient I will reply and ask you to redo the assignment; otherwise I
will respond with an acknowledgement.
- Tests and Final (45%): There will be two chapter tests and a final exam; each will count
equally.
