Beverage Company Case Study

This case study is based on a fictional US beverage company that sells soft drinks, energy drinks, and flavored waters in the states of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, along with the District of Columbia. Weekly sales data for the year 2016 is given at the county level in each state (and the District of Columbia). Quantities sold are recorded for all products, across each unit available for retail sales--individual containers and multi-bottle or can packs. These data are initially separated by product category and region, and are not always given in the same format; however, by the end of the case study, it is expected that they can all be combined into a single data source.
 
Population data is also given for the corresponding counties and DC, and is used as the basis for per capita sales analyses.
 
Various instructions are given in portions of the case study corresponding to each book chapter. However, it is very important to pay attention to titles, footnotes, labels, and other aspects of output that give information on exactly what is being done in a table or graph.

Each sale is recorded with the unit size and the container size. So, for example, if the Size is 20 oz and the unit size is 8, the units are 8-packs of 20 oz bottles.

The Chapter 4 activities are based on data similar to that used in chapter 2, but from the remaining states of Maryland and Virginia, along with the District of Columbia. This data is contained in the files "ColaDCMDVA.sas7bdat" and "Counties--VA, MD, DC.csv".
 
In this data, product information is encoded in a single variable. Elements are separated by dashes, where the first element is a code for the product category [Sodas (S), Energy Drinks (E), or Other Types (O), with only S appearing in the data for this chapter]. The second element is a numeric code for the product type--for the cola products in this data they are: 1, Cola; 2, Diet Cola; 3, Cherry Cola; 4, Diet Cherry Cola; 5, Vanilla Cola; 6, Diet Vanilla Cola. Codes for other product types in future exercises, along with these, are located in the Appendix. The final two elements are the size and unit size, respectively.
 
So, for example, a code of S-3-20 oz-12 refers to 12 packs of 20 oz bottles of Cherry Cola
