ACE Western Series - ACE Singles

The ACE Doubles and Singles Westerns do not have any published reference information. I have found an obscure ACE publication key list but am finding some errors and other problems, so I will just have to use the classic method of observational data collection to put these pages together. I have consolidated all of the western singles from the ACE POTPOURRI section (except for those I still am not certain about - for example, the Edgar Rice Burroughs "Mucker" and other series). Let me know if you have any images for the ACE westerns (or any of the other genres). Please drop me an e-mail at IronWolf Engine Works.

Have fun!

S-082 LOUIS L'AMOUR Kilkenny (cover by Jim Bentley; 1954; listed as "complete novel")

The Graham Holroyd Paperback Prices and Checklist (2003) volume has this edition of Kilkenny as a PBO. My experience with ACE Books is that the notation of "complete novel" often indicated a reprint edition.

In addition, he also wrote historical fiction, science fiction, nonfiction, poetry and numerous short stories. Many of his stories were made into movies. In 1982 he was awarded the Congressional (National) Gold Medal, and in 1984 President Ronald Reagan awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Yes, an ACE double (single cover style) with a banner headline of "Two Complete Western Novels."  The Vengeance Ghost was originally published in ACE G-732 bound with X. X. Jones Bronc (1968).  This suggests that this edition could be considered a PBO as well as a 1st ACE printing.

30795-9 LEWIS B. PATTEN The Gun of Jesse Hand (1973; 1st ACE printing)

30796-5 LEWIS B. PATTEN The Gun of Jesse Hand (cover by G. Gross; c.1973; nd; 2nd ACE printing)

32127-3 (back cover)

Listed as "Two Complete Western Novels."  An ACE Double with a single cover.

Someone at ACE Books was not working very hard.  The placement of these titles should not be in the 32000 ACE Letter-Number series, but rather in the 82000 series based upon the first title being "Trouble."  Oh well, it's ACE.

Hell Bound For Ballarat was originally published as ACE 32725 (1970).

32575 CHARLES O. LOCKE The Hell Bent Kid (c.1957; nd)

32600 JOHN M. SHELLEY Hell-For-Leather Jones (nd)

32815-6 ROBERT E. HOWARD Heroes of Bear Creek (1983; 1st thus)

Although Robert E. Howard is better known for the Conan adventures, it appears he had his hand in the western genre. This volume is listed as "First Time in One Volume!" I am going to put this title also in the POTPOURRI section until I get some control on this story.

34272 GILES A. LUTZ The Honyocker (c.1961; 1969; nd)

43791 LOUIS L'AMOUR Kilkenny (c.1954; 1963; nd; same cover art as ACE 43790)

Note the "Read Easy Large Type" header.  I also have a copy of ACE 43790 with the "Read Easy Large Type" header, suggesting that the edition control on this title may be another ACE headache (argh!).

89600 NELSON NYE Wolf Trap (1969)

90500-5 JACK ZAVADA The Wolfer (1977)

I am confused. Ray Hogan did The Wolfer (ACE M-163, 1966). It was reprinted a number of times (see ACE 90701 or Triple Threat - ACE 82409). So, why the same title (should these not be at least different in the context that they were published by ACE?) If anyone has any insight, I would be interested.

90701 RAY HOGAN (aka ROBERT J. HOGAN) The Wolver (wrap-around cover art by Prezio; c.1967; January 1973; 2nd ACE printing)

I have been enlightened with respect to this question (thank you). It appear that Ray Hogan is Robert J. Hogan and the other title by Jack Zavada is just ACE failing to recognize that a title should be different than one in print (argh).
