60563 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Oakdale Affair (cover by Frank Frazetta; July 1974; 1st ACE printing; listed as "First Time in Paperback")

Features an introduction by longtime ERB fan writer/editor Kevin B. Hancer

60564-8 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Oakdale Affair (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1974; nd; listed as "First Time in Paperback"; 2nd ACE printing)

60565-6 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Oakdale Affair (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1974; nd; Charter edition; 3rd ACE printing)

The Oakdale Affair is another of the ERB stories that I have trouble placing within the ACE IMAGE LIBRARY pages. I have chosen to place this mystery (at least to me) in both this section and the MYSTERY SINGLES section.

60681 BRAD STEIGER (ed.) The Occult World of John Pendragon (c.1967; 1968; 2nd ACE printing; occult/paranormal)

The Occult World of John Pendragon was originally published as ACE K-307 (1967) ACE Star edition. This edition has the same cover art as K-307 and the white block with the letter-number series and price covers the same location on the K-307 cover.

61480 The EDITORS OF SCIENCE & MECHANICS (compilers) The Official Guide To UFO's (1968; 1st ACE printing)

62160-0 FRED SABERHAGEN An Old Friend of the Family (1970)

Sequel to The Holmes-Dracula File - another odd vampire story by "Berserker" Saberhagen (actually kind of fun).

62201-9 MARGARET ERSKINE (aka MARGARET WETHERBY WILLIAMS) Old Mrs. Ommanney Is Dead (c.1955; 1967; nd; 2nd ACE printing; ACE Gothic Mystery)

An "Inspector Finch" Gothic mystery novel. Originally published as ACE K-287 (1967). This story was also released under the titles "The Dead Don't Speak" and "Fatal Relations." Because of the genres, this is also listed in the ACE SINGLES MYSTERY section.

62674-2 BEN ELISCO On Any Given Sunday (1982; ACE Charter edition)

62701 WILLO DAVIS ROBERTS Once A Nurse (c.1966; ACE Nurse Romance Series)

62937-8 CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG (aka CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG LEWIS) The One-Faced Girl (c.1963; 1965; nd)

62937-8 (back cover)

The One-Faced Girl was originally published in the ACE Double G-533 (1965) bound with The Black-Eyed Stranger.  This volume also contains the novella Who's Been Sitting In My Chair.

CHARLOTTE ARMSTRONG (1905-1969; aka Charlotte Armstrong Lewis) was an advertising writer, fashion reporter and was one of the few authentic spell-casting witches of modern time, whose quick rise to popularity was due in part to her bestseller Mischief (1951 PBO Pocket Books and 1950 by Coward-McCann) becoming the basis for the movie Don't Bother to Knock, which debuted a young Marilyn Monroe as a mentally unbalanced baby-sitter.

62983 SHEILA BISHOP The Onlooker (c.1971; nd; ACE Gothic Mystery)

62984 SHEILA BISHOP The Onlooker (cover by Wm. R. Ross; c.1971; nd; ACE Gothic Mystery)

Operators and Things was originally published as ACE K-199 (1964).

63750 JOHN MACKLIN Orbits of the Unknown (1969; 1st thus; occult/paranormal)

Note the "Read Easy/Large Type" blurb on the cover. Is the occult/paranormal reading group aging?

64255 JOHN MACKLIN Other Dimensions (nd; occult/paranormal)

64255 (back cover)

64281-9 JANE BLACKMORE The Other Mother (original title: The Other Room; 1972)

64426-0 NICK CARTER The Ouster Conspiracy (cover by George Gross; nd; 1st ACE printing - Charter imprint)

64510 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Outlaw of Torn (cover by Krenkel; c.1968; later printing; listed as "complete and unabridged")

This copy has the same cover art as the original ACE A-25 (1968) edition, but has the five-digit letter-number series (64510). Definitely a reuse of old stock.

64510 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Outlaw of Torn (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1968; 1973; 2nd ACE printing)

As if the numbering sequence was not cumbersome enough, here is an example of the same number used for two different edition. Originally published as ACE A-25 (1968).

64513-5 EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS The Outlaw of Torn (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1968; 1978; nd)

64595 MARGARET ERSKINE (aka MARGARET WETHERBY WILLIAMS) The Painted Mask (original title: The Limping Man; 1972; 1st thus; ACE Gothic Mystery)

I believe that this story also was released under the title "And Being Dead."

65123 MARK SHIPPER Paperback Novel (1980; 1st ACE printing; fiction)

Although this is a spoof novel concerning The Beatles (John, Paul, George, and Ringo), it is illustrated with many photographs of the musical group.

Original cover art for People vs. Blutcher by Eliot Asinof. Details of title, date and ACE letter-number series on verso. Artist is unknown. Medium is gouache on board (image size 24" x 14.5").

65895 JAN ROFFMAN (aka MARGARET SUMMERTON) Mask of Words (original title: A Penny For The Guy; c.1965; ACE Gothic Mystery Novel)

I have cross-listed this title in both the ACE Singles Mystery and ACE POTPOURRI sections. These are somewhat difficult to classify.

65965 JANET CAIRD Perturbing Spirit (c.1966; nd)

65989 JANET CAIRD Perturbing Spirit (c.1966; 1968; nd)

67075-X RAYMOND BLANK Playing The Game: Strategies For Your Career (1982; 1st ACE printing and PBO; career planning)

This volume has a banner header of "ACE Business Library." I have not run across this publication line before and if any AIL user has, please let me know.

67081-4 NICK CARTER (house pseudonym for ROBERT J. RANDISI) Pleasure Island (cover by George Gross; 1981; 1st ACE printing - Charter imprint)

67081-4 (back cover)

67095 RICHARD NEELY The Plastic Nightmare (cover by Uldis Klavins, 1969, 1st ACE printing)

Original cover art for The Plastic Nightmare.  Gouache on board. 30" x 20." This 1969 Ace Books by Richard Neely was made into the movie "Shattered."

I am not certain if this would be classified as ACE Gothic Mystery or a straight psychological mystery. So, I am also including this title in the ACE Mystery Singles pages.

67400 RAYMOND BUCKLAND (Dr.) A Pocket Guide to the Supernatural (1969; 1st ACE printing; occult/paranormal)

Listed as a "first layman-oriented, coordinated study of an explosively expanding area of knowledge" - sounds like a lexicon or dictionary. Raymond Buckland often uses the nom-de-plume Ray Buckland.

67401 RAYMOND BUCKLAND (Dr.) A Pocket Guide to the Supernatural (c.1969; nd; 2nd ACE printing; occult/paranormal - different cover art)

The Pretty Ones was originally published as ACE K-230 (1967)

67865-3 TIM WARNAK Crossed Swords (1978; 1st ACE printing; photo cover; movie tie-in)

Tim Warnak is both the author of this volume ("novelization" - I really hate that term) and the screenplay writer. This volume also includes "The Making of Crossed Swords" by David M. Petrou and Berta Dominguez D. Illustrated with 16 pages of photos from the film - including the actors Charlton Heston, George C Scott, Ernest Borgnine, and Rachel Welch.

This appears to be an adaptation of "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" by Samuel Clements as I found a note that indicated that "Mark Twain" was one of the authors for the screenplay. Oh, Clements would be howling with laughter and wondering where his cut of the profits was to be delivered.

67930 RUTH ABBEY (aka RUTH PATTISON) Prisoner of the Manor (c.1971; 1973; ACE Gothic Novel)

68520 MAX HASSELL Prophets Without Honor (1971; 1st ACE Star printing; occult/paranormal)

68540 RUTH ABBEY (aka RUTH PATTISON) Portrait of Doubt (May 1973; 1st ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

AIL users - Portrait of Doubt should probably be in the 67000 series rather than 68000 series based upon ACE's Letter-Number scheme related to title of story. Does anyone have a copy of this tale?

68768 FRANCESCA CHIMENTI Psychiatrist's Nurse (1973; 1st ACE printing; ACE Nurse Romance Series)

69128-3 NICK CARTER The Puppet Master (1982; 1st ACE printing - Charter imprint)

69946-4 THOM RACINA Quincy, M. E. #2 (1977; 1st ACE printing and PBO; photo cover)

Still yet another TV spin-off novel for the NBC series starring Jack Klugman (before the time of the CSI phenomena). This is the second novel.

A very good reference (well-indexed and written) on TV Tie-In volumes such as The Flying Nun is by Kurt Peers (1999, 2nd edition) TV Tie-Ins: A bibliography of American TV tie-in paperbacks. TV Books, NY, 364 pp.

69971 MARGARET SUMMERTON Quin's Hide (c.1966; 1973; 2nd ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)
