ACE POTPOURRI

LITERATURE - OF A SORT

Five-digit number format: 40000-49999

40630 SUZANNE MUNSHOWER John Travolta: An Illustrated Biography (1978; 1st ACE printing and PBO; biography)

Listed as "Illustrated" and contains numerous photographs. I notice that this came out about the time that 'disco' had peaked (finally) and 'new wave' and 'punk' were starting to be noticed.

40700 JOHN MACKLIN Journey Beyond the Grave (1970; 1st thus; occult/paranormal)

40801-3 ARLENE HALE (aka MARY ARLENE HALE) Journey for a Nurse (nd; ACE Nurse Romance Series)

40898 RONA RANDALL (aka RONA SHAMBROOK) Journey to Love (1972; 1st ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

Image library users - I need a better cover for this volume. Thank you.

40913-X DAVID R. WHEELER Journey to the Other Side (April 1977; 1st ACE printing; occult/paranormal)

41550 JERRY BLADWIN Kept Man (1975; B/W and graytone photo cover)

41841 WILLIAM BURROUGHS Junkie (c.1953; 1964; January 1970; 3rd ACE printing; ACE Star edition; listed as "complete and unabridged")

41841 (back cover)

The first issue of Junkie was an ACE Double (D-15) in 1953 and was published under the pen-name William Lee. The edition uses the same cover art as the ACE K-202 (1964) edition and is listed under his real name. With foreword by Carl Solomon (dedicatee of Ginsberg's Howl). The publication history of this ACE single is a bit strange.

The 2nd edition is listed (on the copyright page of ACE 41843) as 1970 and for some reason does not list the 1964 (ACE K-202) edition. I have based my printing history notation on the real publication dates (just to define my assumptions).

41842 WILLIAM BURROUGHS Junkie (c.1953; 1964; 1970; 1972; photo cover; listed as "complete and unabridged")

41483 WILLIAM BURROUGHS Junkie (c.1953; 1964; 1970; 1972; 1973; photo cover; listed as "complete and unabridged")

Same cover art for ACE 41842 and 41843. There is a disclaimer on the cover that indicates "originally published under the pen-name of William Lee."

41660 ISAAC ASIMOV Jupiter (1975; revised edition; non-fiction/science)

Science articles dealing with the planet Jupiter and includes "over 35 photos and illustrations."

43233-6 LUCY CORES Katya (1982; 1st ACE printing; historical fiction/romance)

44512 BERNHARDT J. HURWOOD Kingdom of the Spiders (October 1977; 1st ACE printing and PBO; movie poster modified cover art; movie tie-in)

44512 (back cover)

Movie novelization of remake (from Dimension Pictures) of an earlier B-grade science fiction movie. This one stars William Shatner. Note that Bernhardt J. Hurwood was a prolific author in the ACE occult/paranormal genre.  Interesting that Hurwood's name is not on the cover with the title.

47400 (back cover)

Note that this copy has the white-out block with new letter-number series and price.  Thus, this may represent a 2nd ACE edition using the old cover art.

47401 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) The Laughing Ghost (cover by Larry Kresek; c.1943; 1967; 1970; ACE Gothic Mystery)

47402 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) The Laughing Ghost (cover by Larry Kresek; c.1943; 1967; 1970; March 1974; ACE Gothic Mystery)

The Laughing Ghost was originally published as ACE K-301 (1967).

47410 HADRIAN KEENE The Laughing Woman (1970; 1st thus; movie tie-in; photo cover)

This is an unusal book in several ways. First, the ACE logo is different than any I have ever seen and secondly, the adult nature of this movie novel reminds me of some of the Ballantine releases of this time period. If any AIL users has a good copy of this, please drop me an e-gram.

47760 HELEN ARVONEN The Least of All Evils (cover by Jerome Podwil; 1970; 1st ACE printing; ACE Star edition; ACE Gothic Novel)

48470-0 D. E. STEVENSON Listening Valley (nd; ACE romance)

Listed as "A D.E. Stevenson Romance."

48475 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) Listen to Danger (c.1958; 1967; nd; ACE Gothic Mystery)

This edition has the letter-number series in a white block suggesting use of earlier edition. The cover art is also the same as ACE K-267 (1967). However, the top banner is now the "first in gothics" label with the woman and moon graphic.  Thus, this would be the 2nd ACE printing.

48477-5 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) Listen to Danger (c.1958; 1967; nd; ACE Gothic Mystery)

48478 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) Listen to Danger (c.1958; 1967; 4th printing 1973; ACE Gothic Mystery)

48800 (no author) Locker Room Ballads (c.1967; 1968; 1st thus; sports music)

Rugby songs (no kidding) selected from "Britain's best-selling paperbacks - Rugby Songs and More Rugby Songs." Only going to show what ACE would print if it could get the publication rights.

48862 CHARLES FORT Lo! (c.1941; 1964; nd; occult/paranormal)

48862 (back cover)

Original cover art for ACE 48862. Watercolor on paper, on illustration board. Image size is approximately 15.5" x 20.5" (artist or artists unknown). A gorgeous, ethereal work used as a "wraparound" cover for this ACE paperback by Charles Fort that probes the mysteries of the paranormal.

Lo! was originally published as ACE K-217 (1964).

48913 RICHARD WRIGHT The Long Dream (c.1959; 1972; 2nd ACE printing)

The Long Dream was originally published as ACE K-100 (1958) with different cover art. I have a 1958/1959 date for this printing, but have been unable to establish if the ACE K-100 edition was prior to the 1958 Garden Press hardbound edition.

Original cover art for The Long Dream by Richard Wright. Gouache on foam core with an image size of 32" x 20."

49025 JOHN MACKLIN A Look Through Secret Doors (1969; listed as "published for the first time in America"; occult/paranormal)

A Look Through Secret Doors was originally published as Book VI of "The Exorcism Series" in ACE 22225-7 (nd).

Short story collection contains Introduction (by Harlan); Neither Your Jenny Nor Mine; The Universe of Robert Blake; G.B.K. - A Many Flavored Bird; Riding the Dark Train Out; Valerie; The Resurgence of Miss Ankle Strap Wedgie; Daniel White for the Greater Good; Blind Bird, Blind Bird, Go Away from Me; What I Did on My Vacation This Summer by Little Bobby Hirschhorn, Age 27; Mona At Her Windows; When I Was a Hired Gun; A Path Through the Darkness; Battle Without Banners; A Prayer for No One's Enemy; Punky and the Yale Men; and I Curse the Lesson and Bless the Knowledge.

49560 FRANCES J. S. EDEN The Love Gift (c.1970, nd; 1st ACE printing; ACE Nurse Romance)

Nurse stories were common in the D- and F-series of ACE singles. This appears to represent a revival of interest with a special grouping. Note the series title at the top of the cover - "ACE Nurse Romance Series." I believe this was done because of other publishers (e.g. Lance, McFadden. etc.) who also released a number of these nurse-related stories during the late 1960's and early 1970's.

49561-4 FRANCES J. S. EDEN The Love Gift (c.1970, nd; 2nd ACE printing; ACE Romance)

Note that this is now listed as an "Adult Romance for the Modern Woman" rather than classified as a "Nurse Romance."

Original cover art for The Love of Lucifer.

49700 STEPHEN LEWIS (aka TERI WHITE) The Love Merchants (1974)
