10270-0 (back cover)

This is one of the "A Hall of Fame Historical Novel" series developed by ACE in the 1970's. Notice that these were "produced" by Lyle Kenyon Engel - now I wonder what that means?

10302 ANDREA DELMONICO (aka EULA ATWOOD MORRISON) Chateau Chaumond (c.1968; nd; 2nd ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

Chateau Chaumond was originally published as ACE G-744 (1968). Note that the ACE 10302 edition uses the same cover art as ACE G-744 and that the ACE Letter-Number price block on the front shows what I consider a remarking and reuse of existing stock.

10445-2 (back cover)

An Agatha Christie reference. Contains a listing of all published novels, short stories, and collections. Includes plot outlines of "Murder on the Oriental Express" as well as "all major and lesser known works." I have also included this on the ACE Mystery Singles page.

One of those "after-the-movie" books. Based upon a screenplay by Andrew J. Fenady and novelization by Sam Bowie, this volume uses photographs from the Warner Bros. film on the front and rear cover.

Another of the new line of ACE Romances - called "An Adult Romance for the Modern Woman." I actually think this might fall under the "Nurse Romance" genre.

Dr. Ellen was originally published in ACE F-163 (1962).

12406 WILLIAM JOHNSTON Welcome Back, Kotter: The Sweathog Trail, #1 (1976; 1st; ACE Tempo edition; photo cover)

Another television tie-in novelization. Photo cover of cast from show on front. Not quite certain about the proper format for the title. Note that the ACE Tempo editions use of the five-digit numerical series puts this title in the wrong (alphabetical) sequence. If any AIL users has some information on the ACE Tempo series, please drop me an email.

13580-3 BARRY SADLER Casca: The Damned (1982, 1st ACE printing; ACE Charter edition)

Listed as #7 of this series. This is a form of historical fiction, somewhat along the lines of the stories by S. M. Stirling and others. However, it appears to follow the exploits of the "Eternal Mercenary" throughout the past. Not really science fiction, per se.  Thus its location in the POTPOURRI section.

13681 MARIE GARRATT Dangerous Enchantment (original title: And Then Look Down; cover by Robert Maguire; c.1964; nd; ACE Gothic Mystery)

13892-6 SAMUEL EDWARDS (aka NOEL B. GERSON) Daughter of Gascony (1979; 1st thus; historical romance)

Listed as "A Hall of Fame Historical Novel" and produce by Lyle Kenyon Engel (hmmmm ... sounds like a formula novel series).

13915 FRANCES COWAN The Daylight Fear (c.1969; 1973; 1st ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

Note that this ACE Cameo series novel has the ACE Cameo ring logo, but no number for the title. It is suggested that this is the last title of the series (thus, it would be no. 26).

14172-2 NICK CARTER (house pseudonym for JACK CANON) The Death Star Affair (October 1982; 1st ACE printing - Charter imprint)

14180 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) The Deadly Travellers ( frontspiece illustration by Jack Gaughan; c.1959; 1966; 1967; 2nd ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

14182 DOROTHY EDEN (aka DOROTHY ENID EDEN) The Deadly Travellers ( frontspiece illustration by Jack Gaughan; c.1959; 1966; 1967; 3rd ACE printing; ACE Gothic Novel)

Note that both ACE 14182 and ACE 14180 have the 'white-out' and renumbering that suggests these volumes reuse new old stock and result in a headache determining which is the true 2nd ACE printing. But the price on ACE 14180 is 60 cents and ACE 14182 is 75 cents.

Interior illustration by Jack Gaughan (found in both ACE 14180 and ACE 14182 and is the same as in the ACE K-243 edition).

I believe that the frontspiece illustration may be a Jack Gaughan pen and ink. But, cannot find his usual initals (jg) in the image.  Will continue to check on this.

Short stories include Rat Hater; "I'll Bet You a Death"; We Take Care of Our Dead; The Man With the Golden Tongue; Johnny Slice's Stoolie; Joy Ride; Buy Me That Blade; The Hippie-Slayer; Kid Killer; With a Knife in Her Hand; Sob Story (written with Henry Slesar); Look Me in the Eye, Boy!; The Dead Shot; Ship-Shape Pay-Off (written with Robert Silverberg); Made in Heaven; and Students of the Assassin.

The Deadly Streets was originally published as ACE Single D-312 (1958).

The odd thing about this re-issue series (and the other volumes of the Harlan Ellison books) is that ACE Books resurrected the ‘tombstone’ logo [just for this series] both on cover and title pages. Still trying to figure out why.

14221-3 NICK CARTER (house pseudonym for ROBERT J. RANDISI) The Decoy Hit: Killmaster #181  (1983; 1st ACE printing - Charter imprint)

14225 CHARLES COLLINGWOOD The Defector (1970; 1st ACE printing; spy genre/Vietnam War)

14256 (back cover)

In answer to my request for information on this title, I have been rewarded (thank you May). The complete title for this volume is Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft, Addressed to J. G. Lockhart by Sir Walter Scott, Bart. The ACE Image Library user also sent along additional information.

The title at the end of Sir Walter Scott's name is Bart. "Bart." means baronet, which is the lowest rank of nobility, but one grade up from a knight. Both are called "Sir." These "letters" are epistolary lectures on the theory and practice and demonology and witchcraft. Scott was an expert in matters arcane and occult, as well as in the more mundane mediaeval history of Europe and the Middle East. Lastly, the blurb on page 1 ends with "It is with great pride that Ace Publishing Corporation presents this new edition, which follows word for word the original text." The text includes Scott's chapter headings, and footnotes but has no index.

Now all I have to do is find a copy (keep your eyes open). Update: 04 August 2013 - found a copy (yeah, a bit beat up but still an ACE).
