80208-7 WILLIAM SHATNER TekWar (cover by Boris Vallejo, nd; 11th ACE printing)

However, reviewing copyright page finds some conflicting information. A note indicates the 'Introduction' is copyrighted in 2001. ACE Books always makes publication history determination a researchers nightmare. If any AIL users have an earlier edition of this volume (April 1988), please contact me.

G. Harry Stine, an engineer and space enthusiastic, also writes under the pseudonym Lee Correy. This volume is actually non-fiction in its approach to the use of low- and high-orbit for future exploration and industrial development. Another "must read" for ideas about how to think of the use of space.  I have also placed this in the "potpourri" ACE singles section.

80691 ROGER ZELAZNY This Immortal (cover by Gray Morrow; c.1965; 1966; May 1970)

Ths Immortal was originally published as ACE F-393 (July 1966). This edition reuses the Gray Morrow cover art, suggesting this is the 2nd ACE printing.

This Immortal first appeared in 1965 as a 50,000-word piece in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction entitled "... And Call Me Conrad." The next year (1966), it won Zelazny the first of his six Hugo awards, tying with Frank Herbert's Dune. For the novelization, Zelazny expanded the work by 8,000 words. In 1976, This Immortal won a Seiun Award for best novel translated into Japanese.

80693 ROGER ZELAZNY This Immortal (c.1965; 1966; 1970; 1973; July 1974)

80694 ROGER ZELAZNY This Immortal (c.1965; 1966; 1970; 1973; 1974; nd)

There appears to have been two printings with the ACE letter-number series 80694.  One which retains the same printing history as 80693 (listing the first four printings) whereas the second printing drops the print history.  Same cover art and price although they have different ads.  Thank you Bill.

80780-1 ROBERT E. HOWARD Three-Bladed Doom (cover by Sanjulian; December 1979; 1st ACE printing)

80781-X ROBERT E. HOWARD Three-Bladed Doom (cover by Sanjulian; c.1979; March 1987, 2nd ACE printing)

Three-Bladed Doom is an El Borak short story by Robert E. Howard and was not published within Howard's lifetime. El Borak, otherwise known as Francis Xavier Gordon, was a Texan gunfighter from El Paso who had travelled the world and settled in Afghanistan. The character was originally created when Howard was only ten years old but he did not see print until "The Daughter of Erlik Khan" in the December 1934 issue of Top-Notch. Although Howard best known for his fantasy fiction, the El Borak stories are straight adventure fiction and only Three-Bladed Doom contains a fantasy element.

Original cover art for this edition of Three Against the Witch World. Mixed-media (oil and acrylic) by Harry Borgman. Size is 22" x 16.75." However, I am not certain (at this time) if this is the correct artist biography (I will keep looking).

The later printing has to be before September 1982, as that is when ACE Books moved from 51 Madison to 200 Madison.

82355-6 ANDRE NORTON Trey of Swords (wrap-around cover by Charles Mikolaycak; c.1977; July 1978; listed as "First Paperback Publication")

82356-4 ANDRE NORTON Trey of Swords (wrap-around cover by Charles Mikolaycak; listed as "First Paperback Publication;" c.1977; November 1978; however it is a 2nd ACE printing)

Trey of Swords is a collection of three "Witch World" stories.  They are Sword of Ice, Sword of Lost Battles, and Trey of Swords.

82442-0 CLIFFORD D. SIMAK The Trouble With Tycho (cover by Michael Whelan; c.1961; September 1976)

82442-0b (back cover)

82443-9 CLIFFORD D. SIMAK The Trouble With Tycho (cover by Michael Whelan; c.1961; 1976; April 1983; 35d ACE printing)

The Trouble With Tycho was originally published in ACE Double D-517 (1961) bound with A. Bertram Chandler's Bring Back Yesterday.

82481-1 ALAN E. NOURSE Trouble on Titan (cover by Don Dixon; c.1954; December 1986; 1st ACE printing)

This story by Alan E. Nourse was one of the 'so-called' juvenile science fiction books published by the John C. Winston Company (with a great Alex Schomburg cover) that I hunted for in the basement of the library, looking for the distinctive spine label with the rocket ship.

82576-1 SIMON LANG The Tyrants of Tagan (nd)

82660 ROBERT A. HEINLEIN Tunnel In The Sky (c.1955; nd)

There appears to be (thank you Bill) at least three (maybe more) printings that use the same ACE Letter-Number series but are only differentiated by the advertisements in the back.  Publication dates are September 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1973. More on this in the future.

82661 ROBERT A. HEINLEIN Tunnel In The Sky (cover by Steele Savage; c.1955; 1975; 2nd ACE printing)

82661 (back cover)

Tunnel in the Sky was one of Heinlein's "juvenile' novels that was anything but juvenile in its context. Another important story that had a great deal of influence on a young reader.

83287-3 DENNIS SCHMIDT Twilight of the Gods III: Three Trumpets Sounding  (cover by Romas Kukalis; January 1988; 1st ACE printing)

83365-9 PHILIP JOSE FARMER Two Hawks From Earth (cover by Boris Vallejo; May 1979; 1st ACE printing)

This volume was reprinted with same letter-number series and cover art/price in 1980.

83551-1 BOB SHAW The Two-Timers (cover by Stine; c.1968, January 1979; 2nd ACE printing)

The Two-Timers was originally published as ACE H-79 (1968).

83816-2 PAULA VOLSKY The Luck of Relian Kru (wrap around cover by James Warhola; June 1987; ACE Fantasy edition)

This volume is REALLY out of ACE Letter-Number series sequence (oh, ACE Books, some days you wonder who was working)

84000 ANDRE NORTON Uncharted Stars (cover by Jeff Jones and interior illustration by Jack Gaughan; 1970)

Sequel to the Zero Stone.

84000 (back cover)

This ACE Letter-Number series was printed twice with the same Jeff Jones cover art and price.  The first in 1970 and the second in 1972.  They can only be differentiated by the advertisements in the back.

84001 ANDRE NORTON Uncharted Stars (cover by Sam Jones; c.1970; 1972; 1975; 3rd ACE printing)

84292-5 H. BEAM PIPER Uller Uprising (cover by Gino D'Achille; c.1952; June 1983; listed as "First Paperback Publication")

This edition was reprinted again in June 1983 and in February 1984 with the same ACE Letter-Number series, cover art and price.

84315-8 FRED SABERHAGEN The Ultimate Enemy (cover by Michael Whelan; September 1979; 1st ACE printing)

84331 JOHN W. CAMPBELL The Ultimate Weapon (cover by Alex Abel; c.1936; May 1976)

This is an example of the ACE editions that reprinted "Science Fiction From The Great Years"

84466-9 ANDRE NORTON Uncharted Stars (cover by Sam Jones; c.1970; 1972; 1975; October 1983; 4th ACE printing)

Although the copyright page has “Third Ace Science Fiction printing / October 1983”,  there is no number line to support this statement.  In addition, since there are two printings of ACE 84000, it must be the 4th printing.  And, as usual, I have no idea that can explain the really weird jump in the ACE Letter-Number series (ACE strikes again).

84481-2 MICHAEL BISHOP and IAN WATSON Under Heaven's Bridge (cover by Don Punchatz; April 1982; 1st ACE printing)

84481-2 (back cover)

84514-2 ANDREW J. OFFUTT The Undying Wizard (cover by Romas Kukalis; February 1982; 1st ACE printing)

84516-9 ANDREW J. OFFUTT Cormac Mac Art #6: The Undying Wizard (cover by Romas Kukalis; c.1982; 1984; 4th ACE printing)

Based upon Robert E. Howard's writings, this series deals with Cormac Mac Art. Note these two volumes are essentially the same, but the title of the second indicates a series revision.

84563-0 PIERS ANTHONY Unicorn Point (cover by Darrell Sweet; January 2005; 12 ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

84569-X AXEL MADSEN Unisave

84575-4 JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Universe Against Her (cover by Steve Durke; c.1964; April 1979)

The Universe Against Her was originally published as ACE F-314 (1964). This suggests that this is the 2nd ACE printing.  Please note that this ACE Letter-Number has 'First ACE Printing' on the copyright page - argh - ACE Books did not even remember that they originally published this title as ACE F-314 in 1964.

84576-2 JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Universe Against Her (cover by Steve Durke; c.1964; 1979; May 1982; 3rd ACE printing)

84577-0 JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Universe Against Her (cover by Steve Durke; c.1964; 1979; November 1984; 4th ACE printing)

Oh, and to make it even more confusing (you thought ACE would get better), there is another printing of the same ACE Letter-Number series that only has a different price ($.2.75). Now, not sure yet if it is only a promotional cover, but if any AIL users have a copy with that price, please drop me an email.

84581 A. E. VAN VOGT The Universe Maker (cover by Bart Forbes; c.1953; March 1974)

84582 A. E. VAN VOGT The Universe Maker (cover by Bart Forbes; c.1953; 1974; 1976; 4th ACE printing)

Lafferty A Special Condition in Summit City, William Rotsler Patron of the Arts, Joanna Russ Useful Phrases For the Tourist, Harlan Ellison On the Downhill Side, Pamela Sargent The Other Perceiver, Grania Davis My Head's in a Different Place, Now, Gordon Eklund Stalking the Sun, Gardner R. Dozois The Man Who Waved Hello, Gene Wolfe The Headless Man, and Degar Pangborn Tiger Boy. The Harlan Ellison story is a 1st appearance.

84680-7 ROBERT SHECKLEY Untouched By Human Hands (cover by Olivia; March 1979; 1st ACE printing)

Collection of short stories by Sheckley.

84760 D. G. COMPTON A Usual Lunacy (cover by Greg Theakston; June 1983; 1st ACE printing - and maybe a PBO)

84826-5 CHRISTOPHER STASHEFF The Warlock Is Missing (cover by Stephen Hickman; 1986; 1st ACE printing)

Yes, seriously out of ACE letter-number sequence.

84830 DAVID DRAKE Northworld (cover by Tony Roberts; May 1990; 1st ACE printing)

85456-7 ALAN E. NOURSE The Universe Between (1987; 1st thus)

Three connected novella about multiple universes and the difficulty of communication between them. Another of the more thought-provoking books written by Nourse and one of those that was very influential in my educational direction (strange what we read is so important).

85471-0 JAMES TIPTREE, JR. (aka MARY ALICE SHELDON) Up The Walls of the World (cover by R. Courtney; c.1978; January 1984; 1st ACE printing)

85564-4 KATHRYN GRANT The Willow Garden (cover by Segrelles; September 1989; 1st ACE printing)

Book 3 of "The Land of Ten Thousand Willows"

85876-7 MICHAEL SWANWICK Vacuum Flowers (cover by Ron Miller; c.1988; May 1997; 2nd ACE printing)

Another required read in the genre of post-human transcendence.  An amazing jaunt through a well-designed set of worlds no one really had thought about - which is what science fiction really addresses - "what if?"

Another release (with different cover art) for Vacuum Flowers using the same ACE Letter-Number series (1997; 3rd ACE printing).

86050 PHILIP K. DICK The Variable Man and Other Stories (wraparound cover by Charles Mikolaycak; c.1957; 1976)

Original cover art for The Variable Man and Other Stories. Mixed media (18” x 14”) and signed and dated (cmikolaycak 75).

This ACE Letter-Number series only has the copyright date, but the advertisements place it in 1977 and it was before April 1977, when ACE Books started adding the check-sum digit to the ACE Letter-Number.

Victory on Janus was originally published as ACE G-703 (1968). Sequel to Judgement on Janus (ACE F-308; 1964).

Book #4 of the Krishna Series. An ACE double in single cover.

Printed twice with no changes to cover/price/catalog number.  First printing was in February 1983, the second printing was in April 1983.  Neither printing has a number line. Oh, ACE - they do make printing histories complicated.

86609-3 ANDRE NORTON Voorloper (cover by W. Siudmak with interior illustrations by Alicia Austin; September 1980; 1st ACE printing)

Illustrated edition.  Note the mass market edition does not have any illustrations listed or advertisement for such, but they are in the volume.

86610-7 ANDRE NORTON Voorloper (cover by W. Siudmak with interior illustrations by Alicia Austin; c.1980; December 1981; listed as "First Mass Market Publication"; 2nd ACE printing)

Yes, it is the first mass market printing, but it is the 2nd ACE printing by number line (since the trade paperback was the 1st ACE printing).  As I have mentioned, trying to determine if the printing is 1st edition or PBO is difficult.  In addition, this ACE Letter-Number was printed again in 1981, with the number line ending in '3.'

86611-5 ANDRE NORTON Voorloper (cover by W. Siudmak; c.1980; 1981; July 1984; 4th ACE printing)

87333-2 (back cover)

This story is based upon characters created by Philip Francis Nowlan (Armageddon 2419 A.D.) from an outline by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Hmmm - looks like they were thinking of a series like their "Dream Park" stories and handed it off to McEnroe.

There appears to be two (2) printings for this ACE Letter-Number series. The John Pound art edition (above) has a catalogue code of 0-441-087876-8, which may be where the issue resides (ACE Books could not even use its coding sequence correctly). Both printings use the same ACE Letter-Number series and have the same price.  The other printing has the Davis Meltzer cover art.

Contains three novellas: Where Is the Bird of Fire?, Vashti, and Bear. Swann was a pioneer of fantasy, active in a period (early to mid-1960s) when very little fantasy was published, particularly in the United States. (Most of his work appeared in the British magazine SCIENCE FANTASY) He wrote of mythology and the Classical world with great feeling. The classic title story is told from the point of view of a Sylvan who befriended Remus, the brother of Romulus. Vashti is about a wife of Xerxes the Great, who was suspected of being a djinn.

89701 ANDRE NORTON Witch World (cover by Jack Gaughan; c.1963; 1967; 1969; 3rd ACE printing)

This volume has the same cover art and title page illustration by Jack Gaughan, as well as being listed on the cover as "First Book Publication." This is another example of the re-use of old stock. The number block in the upper right has an offset edge suggesting that it was placed over the previous ACE F-series or G-series label. Because of this I would suggest that this would be the 3rd ACE printing edition.

89702 ANDRE NORTON Witch World (cover by J. H. Breslow; c.1963; 1967; 1969; May 1974)

89703 ANDRE NORTON Witch World (cover by J. H. Breslow; c.1963; 1967; 1969; 1974; early 1975)

This ACE Letter-Number series was printed more three times with the same John Pound cover art.  The first was ACE 89707-X (February 1984) and then ACE 89708-8 (January 1986 and February 1988).

Witch World was originally published as ACE F-197 (1963) and G-655 (1967).

89851 JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Witches of Karres (cover by Leo and Diane Dillon; c.1966, 1970)

This is one of the ACE Science Fiction Specials (1st Series).  Note that the date is not on the copyright page.  An AIL user (thank you Bill) indicates that the publisher on the title page includes “A Division of Charter Communications” which only came into being in September 1970. In addition, the advertisements in the back are unnumbered, but later became numbered in November 1970. So this was printed either in September or October of that year.  Oh, the fun of tracking down ACE publication data.

89852 JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Witches of Karres (cover by Bill Ronalds; c.1966; January 1977)

89853-X JAMES H. SCHMITZ The Witches of Karres (cover by Paul Alexander; c.1966; November 1981; 4th ACE printing)
