Contains three novellas: Where Is the Bird of Fire?, Vashti, and Bear. Swann was a pioneer of fantasy, active in a period (early to mid-1960s) when very little fantasy was published, particularly in the United States. (Most of his work appeared in the British magazine SCIENCE FANTASY) He wrote of mythology and the Classical world with great feeling. The classic title story is told from the point of view of a Sylvan who befriended Remus, the brother of Romulus. Vashti is about a wife of Xerxes the Great, who was suspected of being a djinn.

Witch World was originally published as ACE F-197 (1963).

This volume has the same cover and title page illustration by Jack Gaughan, as well as being listed on the cover as "first book publication." This is another example of the re-use of old stock. The number block in the upper right has an offset edge suggesting that it was placed over the previous F-series label. Because of this I would suggest that this would be the 2nd ACE printing edition.
