ACE SF 5 Digit Number-Series SF Singles

Five-digit number format: 70000-79999

70283-X BRIAN HERBERT The Race For God (cover by Joe Burleson; August 1990; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

70301 RALPH MILNE FARLEY The Radio Beasts (c.1925; 1964; probably 1975)

 J. H. Breslow may be the cover artist for this volume (awaiting confirmation).

ACE Books originally published The Radio Beast as ACE F-304 (1964). This is actually the sequel to The Radio Planet.

70320 RALPH MILNE FARLEY The Radio Planet (wraparound cover by Patrick Woodroffe; c.1926; 1964; July 1976; 2nd ACE printing )

Original cover art by Patrick Woodroffe.

Originally published in 1926 as a serial in Argosy All-Story Weekly. This is a "Science Fiction From the Great Years" volume.

ACE Books originally published The Radio Planet as ACE F-312 (1964).

Both of these Farley volumes are "Science Fiction from the Great Years" editions.

70555-3 RICHARD KIRK Raven - Swordmistress of Chaos (cover by Royo; c.1978; February 1987; 1st ACE printing; ACE Fantasy)

70561-8 RICHARD D. KIRK (house psuedonym for ROBERT HOLDSTOCK) Raven 2: A Time of Ghosts (1987; 1st ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

70575-8 RICHARD D. KIRK (house psuedonym for ANGUS WELLS) Raven 5: A Time of Dying (1988; 1st ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

In keeping with the ACE Letter-Number system, this series of fantasy stories start with Raven.

70801-3 TIM LUKEMAN Rajan (1982; 1st ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

71065 ROBERT CHAM GILMAN (aka ALFRED COPPEL) The Rebel of Rhada (cover by Richard Loehle, frontispiece by Jack Gaughan; c.1968; 1969; 1st ACE printing)

First of a young-adult trilogy; the later two volumes did not appear in paperback for decades. The hardcover edition of this story was published in 1968 prior to the paperback release.

71083-2 E. C. TUBB Lallia: Dumarest Of Terra #6 (cover by Paul Alexander; September 1982; 2nd ACE printing)

Notice that according to the ACE numbering scheme, this title is completely out of place. Lallia was originally published as ACE Double 71082 with Nunes and Nunes Recoil (which is why it was in the 71000 series). But it appears by the time of this release even the ACE people has begun to lose track of why (and how) their complicated numbering scheme worked. I wish to thank a helpful AIL user for pointing out this oddness.

71085 ROBERT SILVERBERG Recalled To Life (cover by Don Punchatz; February 1977; listed as "First Paperback Publication")

71100-6 ANDRE NORTON Red Hart Magic (cover by Charles Mikolaycak and 12 full page interior illustrations by Donna Diamond; July 1979; Tempo Books Edition; 1st ACE printing)

71135 PHILIP JOSE FARMER Behind the Walls of Terra (cover by Gray Morrow; 1970; 1st ACE printing)

This is another ACE where the numbering scheme and the title do not correspond. There is an ACE 05360 to ACE 05374 group of titles for Behind the Walls of Terra also having a 1970 publication date.

71140 ROBERT A. HEINLEIN Red Planet (cover by Steele Savage and frontspiece illustration by Clifford Geary; c.1949; January 1971)

There were two printings using the same ACE Letter-Number series.  The second was in [May-August] 1972, but are identical.

Original preliminary cover art by Steele Savage for Red Planet. Gouache on Strathmore paper.  6 7/8" x 4 1/4" Unsigned.

STEELE SAVAGE (1898 - 1970) was a prolific book and magazine illustrator who worked in the industry as a professional illustrator from the 1930s through the 1970s.

71141 ROBERT A. HEINLEIN Red Planet (cover by Steele Savage and frontspiece illustration by Clifford Geary; c.1949; 1971; 1975 - possibly May)

RED SONJA is based on the character created by ROBERT E. HOWARD. This volume includes an Introduction : The Creation of Red Sonja by Roy Thomas. Note that the copyright for all of these Smith and Tierney volumes is attributed to Glenn Lord. In addition, there are a number of reprints (but the number system often does not handle it very well).

72781 ALEXEI PANSHIN Rite of Passage (modifed cover by Leo and Diane Dillon; c.1968; November 1969; 2nd ACE printing)

Rite of Passage was originally published as an ACE Science Fiction Special (1st series) in the ACE Letter-Number series A-16 (1968). The cover art was by Leo and Diane Dillion and this edition reuses part of it. It also lists the Nebula Award (1968) recognition on the cover. Thus, it is probably the 2nd ACE printing.

73127-9 STEPHEN LEIGH Isaac Asimov's Robot City: Robots and Aliens: Changeling   (cover and interior illustrations by Paul Rivoche; August 1989; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

I am uncertain of the correct title format for this Asimov series.  The "Robots and Aliens" phrase works for the ACE Letter-Number series, but the titles on ACE 73126-0 do not follow the same format unless it is "Robot City" that is the phrase used (argh - sometimes the ACE Letter-Number system is just obtuse).
