Illustrated edition with cover artwork by Boris Vallejo and interior illustrations by Esteban Moroto.

51546-0 LARRY NIVEN The Magic Goes Away (cover by Boris Vallejo; c.1978; October 1979)

This edition is listed as "First Mass-Market Edition!" and has a banner advertising the "Massively Illustrated" nature of this edition.  The publication history for this ACE Letter-Number is a bit confusing.  The copyright page has first mass-market printing as October 1979, but as yet no-one seems to have one with a full number line. The trade paperback was printed twice, but neither printing had a number line, although both identify dates in 1978. The third mass market printing [by number line] identifies a second mass market printing as November 1979, but gives no other date for itself (Thank you Bill) - but regardless, ACE once again provides another headache.

51547-9 LARRY NIVEN The Magic Goes Away (cover by Boris Vallejo; c.1978; 1979; October 1981; 5th ACE printing)

Note that this volume has a particular banner (lower right) that is found on the ACE 51552-5 edition. Also, the number line ends with ‘5’ as the lowest number, but it may actually be the sixth overall printing. Which then begs the question:  where's the edition identified as a fourth edition …..

51548-7 LARRY NIVEN (ed.) The Magic May Return (cover and interior illustrations - about 40 - by Alicia Austin; c.1981; 1983; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

Collection of six short stories in another of Larry Niven's sandboxes.  There is another edition, using the same ACE Letter-Number series, but dropping the "First Mass Market," with a publication date of October 1981 (thus, a second or third edition).

51552-5 LARRY NIVEN The Magic Goes Away (cover by Boris Vallejo; c.1978; 1979; 1983; 7th ACE printing)

This volume actually was never printed.  This was a pre-publication cover for the second printing that had the wrong ACE Letter-Number on the cover and spine (54551-6); it was sent to booksellers for ordering only [without a book attached].

Four linked short stories: The Eyes Have It, A Case of Identity, The Muddle of the Woad, and A Stretch of the Imagination. These volumes all use the same cover art by Bob Adragna.

55132-7 CHARLES SHEFFIELD My Brother's Keeper (August 1982; 1st ACE printing)

56011-3 GORDON R. DICKSON Naked To The Stars (cover by Enric; c.1980; nd)

56400-3 NEIL RANDALL Storm of Dust (1987; 1st thus)

This is a novel based upon David Drake's series - Dragon Lord. Listed as "A Crossroads Adventure" that suggests other in this series (which I have not seen yet). Note this volume is out of sequence with respect to the ACE Letter-Number series.

56566-2 SIMON HAWKE The Nautilus Sanction (December 1985)

A "Time Wars" novel, listed as 5th in the series.

56575-1 ROBERT CHAM GILMAN (aka ALFRED COPPEL) The Navigator of Rhada (1986; 1st ACE printing)

56797-5 JOE HALDEMAN (ed.) Nebula Award Stories 17 (cover by Jeffrey Ridge; c.1983; June 1985; 1st ACE printing)

Originally published by Holt, Rinehart & Winston (1983; hardcover). 56851-3 GORDON R. DICKSON Necromancer (cover by Stephen Hickman; April 1981; 1st ACE printing)

56852-1 GORDON R. DICKSON Necromancer (cover by Stephen Hickman; c.1981; 1982; 2nd ACE printing)

56853-X SHERRI S. TEPPER Necromancer Nine (wrap-around cover by James Christensen; September 1983; 1st ACE printing and PBO; ACE Fantasy)

56853-X (back cover)

Listed as sequel to King's Blood Four.  It appears (thank you Bill) that this volume is a bit of challenge.  If you look at the cover art image (wraparound) you will note that the ISBN block on the back has the ACE Letter-Number series 56852-1 whereas the spine and cover have 56853-X.  Hmmm, it appears that in the production of this volume, the promotional cover had the 56852-1 numbering, but it was found that that number had already been used for the 2nd printing of Gordon R. Dickson's Necromancer (see above).  This was fixed (kind of) for the actual published edition of Tepper's Necromancer Nine, but only for the front cover and spine.
The barcode block, now filled in, ended up with the ISBN of the Dickson printing. Only at ACE Books ...............

Book 2 of the True Game series.

56856-4 GORDON R. DICKSON Necromancer (cover by Stephen Hickman; c.1981; 1982; April 1987; 5th ACE printing)

56857-2 SHERRI S. TEPPER Necromancer Nine (cover by James Christensen; c.1983; nd; 3rd ACE printing; ACE Fantasy)

56872-6 ROBERT SILVERBERG Needle in a TIme Stack (cover by Don Dixon; c.1966; November 1985; 1st ACE printing)

56940 LEIGH BRACKETT The Nemesis From Terra (cover by Carlos Ochagavia; c.1961; December 1976; 2nd ACE printing)

The Nemesis From Terra was originally published in ACE Double F-123 (1961) bound with Robert Silverberg's Collision Course.

LEIGH DOUGLAS BRACKETT (b. 1915; d. 1978) was one of the earliest of the women science fiction (and fantasy) writers. Her first published science fiction story, Martian Quest, appeared in Astounding in 1940. She was a prolific writer in the genres of science fiction (her most recognized story is probably The Long Tomorrow, c. 1955 - ACE F-135), mystery, and western as well as television and movie scripts ("The Big Sleep" - 1946 and "Rio Bravo" - 1958).

56941-2 LOREN J. MacGREGOR The Net (1987; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

56941-2 (back cover)

This is one of the "New ACE Science Fiction Special Editions" edited by Terry Carr.

56956-0 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by James Warhola; July 1984; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

56956-0 (back cover)

This is one of the "New ACE Science Fiction Special Editions" edited by Terry Carr. Probably the starting point of the cyberpunk movement, but his second book, Count Zero, is much better (in my opinion).  Actually, I still think the precursor for the cyberpunk movement is Brunner's Shockwave Rider.

Note: a pre-publication cover used different colors for the graphics.

56957-9 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by James Warhola; c.1984; August 1984; 2nd ACE printing)

56958-7 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by James Warhola; c.1984; August 1985; 3rd ACE printing)

Note: the graphics colours are different in this edition.

56958-7 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by Richard Berry; c.1984; 1985; December 1985; 4th ACE printing)

56958-7 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by Richard Berry; c.1984; 1985; April 1986; 5th ACE printing)

The 4th and 5th printings have the same ACE Letter-Number series as the 3rd printing but with new cover art by Richard Berry.

56959-5 WILLIAM GIBSON Neuromancer (cover by Richard Berry; c.1984; 1985; 1986; July 1986; 7th ACE printing)

Note the awards won: Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick.  If you are wondering where the 6th ACE printing is found  (thank you Bill), you are not alone.  The printing history for the 7th ACE printing does not have a 6th printing listed.  Argh - oh ACE Books, just when you thought you had seen everything, something new arises.

And, yet another ACE wonder.  ACE 56959-5 reprinted with a new cover (and price). So, 8th edition?  Working on this.

56973-0 KIRK MITCHELL Never The Twain (1987; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

57457-2 EMMA BULL Bone Dance (cover by Jean Targete; May 1991; 1st ACE printing and PBO; urban fantasy)

Yes, this title is SERIOUSLY out of sequence with the ACE  Letter-Number series, but I did check several different ways and this is the 5-digit number code assigned (argh).

58417-9 SIMON GREEN Hawk & Fisher (cover by Louis Royo; nd; ACE fantasy)

Simon Green is also the author of the "Nightside" fantasy series. Note that this volume is seriously out of sequence for the ACE Letter-Number series (argh - wish they would follow the rules - must be some series title that starts with an "N" maybe?).

Update - 13 February 2021.  The book was released in the UK by Headline [a month before the Ace edition] and the title was “No Haven for the Guilty” - so perhaps the ACE Letter-Number series was assigned before the title change ….. (thank you Bill for this information).
