30590 LOUIS and JACQUELYN TRIMBLE Guardians of the Gate (cover by Harry Borgman; January 1972; first thus)

Note: this is the only Louis Trimble story that I have ever found that has his wife as a co-author.  Jacquelyn Trimble has another ACE volume - as J. L. H. Whitney The Whisper of Shadow (this is an ACE Gothic genre story).

30600 EDWIN L. ARNOLD Gulliver of Mars (original title: Lieut. Gulliver Jones; cover and frontis drawing by Frank Frazetta; c.1905; 1964; listed as "Complete & Unabridged")

Gulliver of Mars was originally published as ACE F-296 (1964). This edition has the same collophon with "ACE Science Fiction Classic" and uses the same cover art by Frank Frazetta as on ACE F-296. All of these criteria suggests another example of a volume that is renumbered old stock.

30873-2 BYRON PREISS Guts: An Illustrated Novel (1979; 1st thus)

Illustrations by Gray Morrow and Michael Golden.

31590 LEIGH BRACKETT The Halfling and Other Stories (cover by Karel Thole; September 1973; 1st ACE printing)

31591-7 LEIGH BRACKETT The Halfling and Other Stories (cover by Karel Thole; c.1973; 1975; 2nd ACE printing)

Note the interesting blackout under the slug line for the ACE Letter-Number.

Story story collection (seven stories)

LEIGH DOUGLAS BRACKETT (b. 1915; d. 1978) was one of the earliest of the women science fiction (and fantasy) writers. Her first published science fiction story, Martian Quest, appeared in Astounding in 1940. She was a prolific writer in the genres of science fiction (her most recognized story is probably The Long Tomorrow, c. 1955), mystery, and western as well as television and movie scripts ("The Big Sleep" - 1946 and "Rio Bravo" - 1958).

31599-2 DAVID DRAKE Hammer's Slammers (cover by Paul Alexander; c.1979; 1983)

31602-6 DAVID DRAKE Hammer's Slammers (c.1979; 1983; nd)

Collection of combat SF short stories in the "Slammers" universe, most of which were previously published in Analog and other SF magazines.

31627-1 L. SPRAGUE de CAMP The Hand of Zei (cover by Paul Alexander; c.1963; August 1982)

The Hand of Zei was originally published in ACE Double F-249 (1963) bound with The Search for Zei. Also note that the ACE F-249 version was listed as "Abridged By The Author" and I am uncertain whether this edition is an "Abridged" or "Complete" version.

Update (19 February 2013): It appears that this is the 1st ACE paperback edition of the 1981 Owlswick hardcover edition.  The two (2) ACE Double (F-249) stories were combined into one volume and published as such under one title.  This ACE edition was later reprinted under the same ACE Letter-Number (with same cover and price) in March 1983.

31750-2 JOHN MYERS MYERS The Harp and the Blade (cover by James Warhola; February 1985; 1st ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

This ACE Letter-Number was printed twice, with the earliest in 1968 and the second in either late 1969 or early 1970 (based upon the advertisements).

37206-6 (back cover)

This is Bruce Sterling's first novel.  In many ways, an oddly twisted takeoff on "Moby Dick."

37217-1 COLIN KAPP The Ion War (cover by Ken Barr; October 1978; 1st ACE printing)

37290 ANDRE NORTON Iron Cage (wrap-around cover by Charles Mikolaycak; c.1974; 1976; listed as "First Paperback Publication")

This ACE Letter-Number series was then reprinted with the same cover art in September 1982 (6th ACE printing). Still trying to find the 3rd and 4th printings (or if they were actually printed).

37294-5 ANDRE NORTON Iron Cage (cover by Charles Mikolaycak; c.1974; 1976; 1981; 1983; October 1986; 7th ACE printing)

Volume One of War of the Gods on Earth series.

37365-8 ROBERT E. HOWARD The Iron Man and The Adventures of Dennis Dorgan (October 1983; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

Not certain that this would be considered an ACE Double, per se.  The cover art is not attributed, but there is a single initial "F" - maybe Steven Fabian?  Will work on this.

37367-4 JACK McDEVITT The Hercules Text (cover by Earl Keleny; 1986; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

This is one of the new ACE Science Fiction Specials (3rd. Series), edited by Terry Carr. This is also Jack McDevitt's first novel.

37384-4 ARTHUR BRYON COVER Isaac Asimov's Robot City: Book 4: Prodigy (cover and interior illustrations by Paul Rivoche; January 1988; 1st ACE printing)

I am uncertain how this fits into the Asimov storyline of The Caves of Steel and other stories. I am also not certain about the authorization of this story line. If any AIL user is more familiar with this specific genre, please drop me an e-gram. Thanks.

37421-2 JOSEPH SILVA (aka RON GOULART) The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977; movie tie-in volume with photo covers and photo inserts; 1st thus)

Film novelization based upon the work of H. G. Wells. This edition is the screen play for the motion picture from American International Pictures. This is the second movie version of the H. G. Wells science fiction novel. Stars Burt Lancaster, Michael York, Barbara Carrera, and Richard Basehart and filmed in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Lancaster perfectly matches Wells' description of Moreau's physical appearance, unlike the other two actors to play the role on screen, Charles Laughton in Island of Lost Souls (1933) and Marlon Brando in The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996).

Sixteen pages of black and white photos from the movie.

This volume is also listed in the ACE POTPOURRI section.
