This ACE Letter-Number volume was printed twice (second time is in 1974 between February to July) with the same catalogue number, price, and cover art.  But the advertisements are different (thank Bill for sorting out this important technique to 'date' these volumes).

Listed under heading "Combat Command," and an encircled number (#9) indicating a series.

ROBERT ASPRIN (1946-2008) first novel was The Cold Cash War (1977). This is one of the RPG ('role playing game') novels that have become more abundant (I will not indicate that they are popular - at least to me - I just could not get myself to read this yet) in the last 30 years. Listed under heading "Combat Command," and an encircled number (#2) indicating a series. MARK ACRES also writes in a fantasy genre (Runesword). I would also like to know if this is a pseudonym.

11536-5 TROY DENNING Combat Command: The Omega Rebellion (cover by Don Dixon; 1987; 1st ACE printing)

Based upon the work of Keith Laumer's Star Colony. This is one of the RPG ('role playing game') novels and has interior illustrations. I do not know if the rights to the franchise were acquired, but it is listed under heading "Combat Command," and an encircled number (#13) indicating a series.

11681-7 SPRAGUE de CAMP and LIN CARTER Conan of the Isles (Conan #12; different cover by Boris Vallejo; nd)

Once again, ACE Books makes cataloguing a difficult activity. It appears that this edition (Conan #12) uses the same ACE Letter-Number but has different cover art as well as a very interesting front cover blurb:

"This edition authorized by Conan Properties, Inc., the representatives of all Conan authors." Hmmmm - look like some publishing scandal. If any of the AIL users who are Conan fans can let me know, this might be something I need to annotate.

11682-5 L. SPRAGUE de CAMP and LIN CARTER Conan of Aquilonia (Conan #11; nd)

11682-5 (back cover)

11684-1 ANDREW J. OFFUTT Conan and the Sorcerer (cover art by Sanjulian and interior black-&-white illustrations by Esteban Maroto; c.1978; 1979; 1st mass market ACE printing)

11686-8 FRITZ LEIBER Conjure Wife (cover by FMA; November 1981; 1st ACE printing; fanasy)

The first ACE printing was issued with two covers, both die-cut, one in black and one in copper.  The artwork is initalled FMA - if any AIL user might know who this represents, please drop me a note.

Also published as ACE 11712-0 (1981).

11691 ANDREW J. OFFUTT Conan and the Sorcerer (cover art by Sanjulian and interior illustrations by Esteban Maroto; May 1979; 1st ACE printing)

11693-0 STAN LEE Conan: The Barbarian, Vol. 2 (~1978)

11694-9 STAN LEE Conan: The Barbarian, Vol. 3 (1978)

OK - a mash-up. Marvel Comics and ACE Books join together to reprint early Conan stories (and the comic artwork) by Roy Thomas and Barry (Winsor) Smith. This edition has three (3) stories (and associated art). Note that I am leaving Stan Lee as 'author' as he should get credit for everything Marvel Comics has done! I will see if I can sort out this series and find out who really edited this mash-up.

11695-7 ROY THOMAS and BARRY SMITH Conan: The Barbarian, Vol. 4 (1978)

Includes Beware the Wrath of Anu! and Rogues in the House. Note that Thomas and Smith are detailed as 'authors' and Stan Lee's name is missing (argh).

11705 ROBERT SILVERBERG Conquerers From the Darkness (c.1957; nd)

11705-8 ROBERT SILVERBERG Conquerers From the Darkness and Master of Life and Death (c.1957; 1965; July 1979)

An ACE Double in a single cover and in this form is a 1st thus.

Master of Life and Death was originally published in ACE Double D-237 (1957) bound with James White's The Secret Visitors.

11711-2 ZOHRA GREENHALGH Contrarywise (1989; 1st ACE printing; ACE fantasy)

11712-0 FRITZ LEIBER Conjure Wife (cover by FMA; c.1981; July 1981; 2nd ACE printing; fantasy)

Uses same cover art as ACE 11686-8 with different slugline location and the artist initials (FMA) are cropped out of the image.

11736-8 JAMES HENDERSON Copperhead (1972; SF mystery)

11736-8 (back cover)

11739-2 AKAN YATES Coriolanus, The Chariot! (cover by Alex Ebel; July 1978; 1st ACE printing)

11749-X FRITZ LEIBER Conjure Wife (cover by John Pound; nd)

11756-2 H. BEAM PIPER The Cosmic Computer (original title: Junkyard Planet; cover by Michael Whelan; c.1963; 1964; 1977; 2nd ACE printing)

11757-6 H. BEAM PIPER The Cosmic Computer (original title: Junkyard Planet; cover by Michael Whelan; c.1963; 1964; 1977; nd; 3rd ACE printing)

11759-7 H. BEAM PIPER The Cosmic Computer (original title: Junkyard Planet; cover by Michael Whelan; c.1963; 1964; 1977; September 1983; 4th ACE printing)

The Cosmic Computer was originally published as ACE F-274 (1964) and is one of the three most influential of the H. Beam Piper stories I read as a child.  Junkyard Planet (aka The Cosmic Computer) was published by Putnam in 1963.  With the change of name, I have indicated only the ACE publication history.

11773-2 WILLIAM GIBSON Count Zero (cover by Richard Berry; c.1986; April 1987; 1st ACE printing)

Although Neuromancer lofted Gibson to the top of the cyberpunk authors, I have always recommended Count Zero (the second book of the "Sprawl" series) as the best example of 'cyberpunk' genre writing by him.

11791-0 RICHARD A. LUPOFF Countersolar! (1989)

11816-X STEVEN BRUST Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grille (cover by Jim Gurney; January 1990; 1st ACE printing)

11858-5 ROBERT E. HOWARD and L. SPRAGUE de CAMP Conan the Adventurer (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1968; nd)

11858-5 (back cover)

Conan series #5.  Contains Introduction (L. Sprague de Camp) with The People of the Black Circle, The Slithering Shadow, and The Pool of the Black One (all by Robert E. Howard) and Drums of Tombalku (Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague de Camp).

11863-1 ROBERT E. HOWARD and L. SPRAGUE de CAMP Conan the Freebooter (cover by Boris Vallejo; c.1968; November 1986; 19th ACE printing )

The Conan volumes compiled and edited by de Camp are crammed full of stuff. This volume is no exception. Pages 6 and 7 contain a map of the Hyborian Age world of Conan, based upon notes and sketches by Robert E. Howard and upon previous maps by P. Schulyer Miller, John D. Clark, David Kyle, and L. Spraque de Camp.

This edition contains an Introduction (by de Camp which details the writing and rewriting history) and five (5) short stories including Hawks Over Shem and The Road of Eagles (both by Howard and de Camp) and Black Colossus, Shadows in the Moonlight, and A Witch Shall Be Born (Howard).

11880-1 PIERS ANTHONY Chton (cover by John Jude Palencar; March 1987; 1st ACE printing)

An interesting variant of ACE Books publication was brought to my attention (Thank Bill). The 2nd ACE printing of Chton (with the same Palencar cover art) was published in 1988 (April). However, it was given away free to anyone who bought the hard cover edition of Robot Adept.   Except for the printing statement/line on the copyright page, the ACE logo does not appear on the book, nor is there an ACE Letter-Number assignment on the cover.

This ACE Letter-Number series was printed at least three times with the same price and cover art. The only way to differentiate the two additional printings is the advertisements in the back. In the 1st printing,  all of the advertisements were of the unnumbered type. In the second printing, probably February 1971,
one advertisement has 8A-2-71 while the other advertisements just have numbers. The third printing, around June 1971,
not only had the 8A-2-71 advertisement, but also 25-6-71 and [24]-6-7. Wow, and you thought the ads at the back were only good for checking on what new Andre Norton story you wanted to buy!

Daybreak - 2250 A. D. was originally published in ACE Double D-69 (1954) bound with Lewis Padgett's (aka Henry Kuttner) and C. L. Moore's Beyond Earth's Gate. It was later published as ACE D-534 (1961), F-323 (1965), and G-717 (1968). Note that the cover art of ACE 13989, and ACE 13992 to ACE 13994 editions is a reinterpretation of the cover art of ACE D-69 (and in my estimation not as good).

However, the number line is "8 0 9,"  so this date and edition is either a misprint or there is a duplicate printing with this or an earlier Letter-Number series. More on this later.

29 July 2020: ACE Letter-Number 14229-X (November 1984) conflicts with ACE 14236-2, which has the number line 8 0 9.

16668 JOHN BRUNNER The Dramaturges of Yan (cover by Chris Foss; 1972)

Printed twice in 1972 with same ACE Letter-Number series as well as cover art and price.  The only way to tell them apart is the advertisments in the back. cover/price.  First printing was published in February [from a Brunner biography] and the second printing probably in December.  Thank you Bill.

16669 ANDRE NORTON Dread Companion (cover by Kelly Freas; 1970; listed as "first time in paperback")

16670 ANDRE NORTON Dread Companion (cover by Kelly Freas; c.1970; nd; 2nd ACE printing)

16671 ANDRE NORTON Dread Companion (c.1970; March 1977; 3rd ACE printing; different cover art)

Original cover art by Kelly Freas for Dread Companion.

16701 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (cover by Kelly Freas; c.1966; June 1970)

The Dream Master was originally published as ACE F-403 (1966) and was the 1965 Hugo winner (tied with FRANK HERBERT Dune).

This volume reuses the same Freas cover art (including the notation "first book publication" and the interior illustration by Jack Gaughan) and represents the re-use of old stock with new letter-number designation. Probably 2nd ACE printing.

16702 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (c.1966, 1970; April 1973)

Cover for ACE 16702 (and following editions) is probably by J. H. Breslow [the Nebula seal covers the initials JHB].

16703 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (c.1966, 1970; 1973; 1974; 4th ACE printing)

16704 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (c.1966, 1970; 1973; 1974; 1976; 5th ACE printing)

This ACE Letter-Number volume was reprinted with the same cover art and price, probably later in 1976 (only difference is the advertisements in the back of the volume) Thank you Bill.

16705-5 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (c.1966; 1970; 1973; 1974; 1976; 1979)

16706-3 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (cover by Walter Velez; c.1966; 1970; 1973; 1974; 1976; 1979; October 1981; 7th ACE printing)

16708 ROGER ZELAZNY The Dream Master (c.1966; 1970; 1973; 1974; 1976; 1979; 1981; March 1987)

16712-8 LARRY NIVEN and STEVEN BARNES The Barsoom Project (cover by Joe Burleson; September 1989; 1st ACE printing)

16727-6 LARRY NIVEN and STEVEN BARNES Dream Park (cover by Jim Burns; c.1981; April 1983; listed as "first mass market edition")

16727-6 (back cover)

There are probably two other printings of this same ACE Letter-Number series with same cover art ( May and August of 1982). Still working on this (Thank you Bill).

16728-4 LARRY NIVEN and STEVEN BARNES Dream Park (cover by Jim Burns; c.1981; 1983; nd)

16729-2 LARRY NIVEN and STEVEN BARNES Dream Park (cover by Jim Burns; c.1981; 1983; March 1984; 5th ACE printing)

16730-6 LARRY NIVEN and STEVEN BARNES Dream Park (cover by Matt Stawicki; c.1981; May 1982; seems out of sequence in publication series)

In answer to my comment on the 'out of sequence' appearance of this edition, I have new information (Thank you Bill).  This particular printing copies an earlier copyright page, but gives NO data on the current printing [except for the artist credit]. It has a new 10-1 number line, but is at least the 13th printing. It came out in April 2003 as part of the Ace 50th Anniversary year, although it has new artwork (by Matt Stawicki). Note that this particular ACE Letter-Number has been in use since about 1986 [through about 6-8 printings and at least three different covers].

16813-2 WILLIAM C. DIETZ Drifter (cover by Jean Targete; September 1991; 1st ACE printing)

Reprinted twice (December 1999 and February 2007) with the same ACE Letter-Number series and cover art, but different typography over the artwork.

16814-0 WILLIAM C. DIETZ Drifter's Run (cover by Jean Targete; June 1992; 1st ACE printing)

This volume was reprinted at least twice (January 2001 and March 2007) with the same ACE Letter-Number series.

16815-9 WILLIAM C. DIETZ Drifter's War (cover by Luis Royo; November 1992; 1st ACE printing)

This volume was reprinted at least three times with the same ACE Letter-Number series.

17215-1 (no author listed on cover) Flash Gordon: Book Two: War of the Citadels (cover by Boris Vallejo; 1980; 1st ACE printing as ACE TEMPO edition)

17215-1 (back cover)

17233-X (no author listed on cover) Flash Gordon: Book Four: Forces From the Federation (cover by Boris Vallejo; 1981; 1st ACE printing as ACE TEMPO edition)

These volume constitute a series based upon the characters of the serial "Flash Gordon." The authorship for these is attributed to David Hagberg, but not given credit on the cover. They are also out-of-sequence in the ACE Letter-Number system, unless this is because they are under the ACE Tempo subgroup.

17239-3 BEN BOVA The Dueling Machine (cover by Ken Barr; September 1978; 1st ACE printing)

17260 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by John Schoenherr; c.1965; 1966; nd; 2nd ACE printing; listed as "complete and unabridged")

There is a bit of a story with this ACE Letter-Number volume.  I had been informed (a couple of years ago) that there was an ACE 17260 that may be the 2nd ACE printing - and was awaiting for more information on this issue (thank you Martin).  Bill, one of the major contributors to the AIL, send me an image of his copy of Dune - with the ACE Letter-Number of 17620 (yes, not a typo - though there may be some dyslexia involved ….). Here is the image (I am not going to put this in the sequence just yet).  More on this as we gather more information.

17261 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by John Schoenherr; c.1965; 1966; nd; 3rd ACE printing; listed as "complete and unabridged")

17262 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by John Schoenherr; c.1965; 1966; nd; 4th ACE printing; listed as "complete and unabridged")

Dune was originally published as ACE N-3 (1966). This volume uses the same Schoenherr cover art and represents the re-use of old stock.

17263 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by Don Punchatz; c.1965; 1966; 1974)

17264 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by Don Punchatz; c.1965; 1966; 1974; nd)

17265 FRANK HERBERT Dune (cover by Don Punchatz; c.1965; 1966; 1974; nd)

17266-0 FRANK HERBERT Dune (c.1965; 1966; 1974; 1987; different cover art)

17269-5 FRANK HERBERT Dune Messiah (July 1985; 1st ACE printing)

Please note that I have seen up to the 20th ACE printing under this cover art and the same Letter-Number series. I also have another cover art image for this ACE Letter-Number series, listed as 31st ACE printing, still using the same cover art.

17271-7 FRANK HERBERT Dune (c.1965; 1966; 1974; 1987; 1990; 22nd ACE printing; different cover art than ACE 17266-0)

Listed as "Book One in the Dune Chronicles." I also have seen a similar ACE Letter-Number edition with a 1996 publication date.

18067-1 PHYLLIS GOTLIEB Emperor, Swords, Pentacles (c.1982; May 1985; 3rd ACE printing)

The first two printings of this story are ACE 20547-X.  See that ACE Letter-Number series for discussion on this placement in the ACE catalogue.

18770 RICHARD A. LUPOFF Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master Of Adventure (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1968; nd; biography)

Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master Of Adventure was originally published as ACE N-6 (1968). Note the renumber block in white and the same cover art. This is probably the 2nd ACE printing.  This volume is also listed in the ACE Potpourri pages.

This volume is an ERB biography that focuses upon the characters, stories, and venues of his writings.  Cover art by Frank Frazetta.  In addition, there are 12 interior pieces of art. Six by Frazetta, two by Reed Crandall and four by Al Williamson with Reed Crandall.

18771 RICHARD A. LUPOFF Edgar Rice Burroughs: Master Of Adventure (cover by Frank Frazetta; c.1968; 1975; different cover art; biography)

This edition has a new Introduction that is dated 1975.
