By January of 1994, ACE Books had been taken over by Berkley.  This marks the end of the ACE Letter-Number system for cataloguing.  However, new titles simply started to use up the ACE Letter-Number series that had not been used.  Thus, this is why from 00000 to 10000 there are numerous titles that do not conform to the old ACE Letter-Number procedure based upon the title.

Another novel written by a member of the original Star Trek crew. As with many, these were written in association (either specifically noted on the cover or in the acknowledgements) with another writer. I especially like how they note them on the cover.  Sorry, just a pet peeve about citation of works with regards to whom does what (happens all the time in scientific literature, but is really annoying in literature as it is more difficult to distribute either praise or blame).

01038-5 JOHN MADDOX ROBERTS Hannibal's Children: A Novel of Alternate History (2003; 1st ACE printing)

JOHN MADDOX ROBERTS is the author of the historical mysteries "SPQR" set in the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire period. This story is an alternate history in which Carthage wins the Punic Wars. Thus its inclusion in the science fiction section, similar to the stories of S. M. Stirling or Harry Turtledove.

01043 LARRY MADDOX (aka JACK JARDINE) Agent of T.E.R.R.A. #4: The Time Trap Gambit (1969)

In this volume is another example of an ACE Books oddity. There is an advertisement in the end pages of ACE 01043 for the three prior stories of this series:  ACE 01040 Agent of T.E.R.R.A. #1: The Flying Saucer Gambit;  ACE 01041 Agent of T.E.R.R.A. #2: The Golden Goddess Gambit; and ACE 01042 Agent of T.E.R.R.A. #3: The Emerald Elephant Gambit.  However, these five-digit ACE letter-number series titles do not exist.  Thanks to Bill for uncovering this.

01052 JOHN G. HENRY A Just Determination (cover by Michael Herring; 2003; 1st ACE printing)

01065-2 SIMON R. GREEN Something From the Darkside (nd; fantasy/detective)

The Simon Green fantasy detective stories are like a graphic novel, without the artwork. For some reason they are not very satisfying and leave me feeling as if they are missing something necessary.

01066-0 POUL ANDERSON Agent of the Terran Empire (cover by Michael Whelan; January 1980; 1st ACE printing)

01067-9 POUL ANDERSON Agent of the Terran Empire (cover by Michael Whelan; c.1980; 1981; 2nd ACE printing)

Book 3: Dominic Flandry saga.  There is a bit of publishing history confusion with this set of titles.  The attribution of ACE printing history is from the volumes, but it does not quite match the publishing history from the number lines on the copyright page.  Looks like ACE Books was doing a 'fine' job of quality control once again.

This ACE volume is "based on the DC Universe animated movie from Warner Premiere." Simonson provided the novelization based on a story by Jordan Goldberg (a bit complicated history here). My other notes indicate that this volume (and the animated movie) are a prequel to the Dark Knight big-screen movie.

01794-2 STEVEN R. BOYETT Ariel (cover by Steve Stone; c.1983; August 2009; ACE fantasy)

Steven Boyett's Architects of Sleep was an amazing first book.  Ariel (which is his second book) is pretty good and has been co-opted for the television series "Revolution" - but without the unicorn (screenwriters - argh).  This volume is listed as "includes restored material and an afterword by the author new to this edition."

Note: Ariel has an earlier ACE edition, but in the Letter-Number series 02920-5.  Cover art for these was by Barclay Shaw.

01845-9 WALTER GREATSHELL Xombies: Apocalypticon (2010l 1st ACE printing)

Yes, these are out of sequence, but it appears that in 2010, ACE Books (read Penguin Books) was not really paying attention to the letter-number sequence.

This title is Time Tapestry Book Four; An Alternate History Epic.

01862-9 TALIA GRYPHON Key To Justice (March 2010; 1st ACE printing; ACE paranormal fantasy)

02236-7 STANLEY SCHMIDT (ed.) Analog Yearbook II (cover by Vincent DiFate; March 1981; 1st ACE printing)

Short story collection from Analog.  There were two printings using the same letter-number series.  The one listed above is the published edition with a $2.50 price. ACE Books (and probably all of the other publishers) had what were called "promotional covers" that were sent to the bookstores (and booksellers).  This allowed them to see what they would order, which is why the actual published book might have a different cover than the promotional covers.  For this volume, there were not one but TWO promotional covers for the same book!  One  promotional cover at $1.95, a second at $2.25 with the eventual released one at $2.50.  All with the same artwork.  Who knew that there was so much work on getting the cover art marketable.

02255-3 A. E. VAN VOGT The Anarchistic Colossus (April 1977; listed as "An ACE Original")

Includes an Introduction by A. E. van Vogt.

02257-X S. N. LEWITT Cybernetic Jungle (cover by Luis Royo; March 1992; 1st ACE printing)

This ACE Letter-Number has no date on the copyright page other than the original copyright (1970), but the price indicates a 1976 or early 1977 date for publication.  More on this later.

02268 JOANNA RUSS And Chaos Died (cover by Leo and Diane Dillon; January 1970; 1st ACE printing)

02295 (back cover)

02320 ALEXEI PANSHIN Masque World (cover by Kelly Freas; 1969; 1st ACE printing)

The 3rd Anthony Villers novel. Note that although this looks like it is out of seqeuence with the ACE numbering scheme and title, ACE Books considers the title of this series to be "Anthony Villiers: Masque World."

02320-7 R. A. LAFFERTY Annals of Klepsis (cover by James Gurney; 1983; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

Note the numbering sequence looks odd - but that is what is on the volume.  The Panshin and this volume have the same ACE Letter-Number series of 02320.  Will look into this further as I have time.

02359-2 ROBERT ASPRIN Another Fine Myth (cover by Walter Velez; August 1984; ACE fantasy)

Another Fine Myth was originally published by Donning/Starblaze in 1978.

This volume is an expansion of the story Alien From Arcturus.

02935 PHILIP FRANCIS NOWLAND Armageddon 2419 A. D. (cover by Emsh; c.1962; 1969; 2nd ACE printing;  listed as "Complete & Unabridged")

Armageddon 2419 A.D. was originally published as ACE F-188 (1962). This edition is an example of the re-use and renumbering of old stock. This is probably the 2nd ACE printing.

02936 PHILIP FRANCIS NOWLAND Armageddon 2419 A. D. (c.1962; 1969; October 1972; 3rd ACE printing; different cover art)

02938 PHILIP FRANCIS NOWLAND Armageddon 2419 A. D (c.1962; 1969; 1972; August 1974)

02939-6 PHILIP FRANCIS NOWLAND Armageddon 2419 A. D (front cover by Don Brautigan and back cover by Dean Ellis; c.1962; 1969; 1972; 1974; August 1978)

03297-4 JACK VANCE (aka JOHN HOBROOK VANCE) The Asutra (cover by Peter Dama; December 1978; 1st ACE printing)

Conclusion of the Durdane Trilogy

There is at least two more printings of this ACE Letter-Number series.  The one I have been shown still retains the “Ace edition / December 1978” statement but the number line ends with ‘3’ and was published January 1988 per Locus. (Thank you Bill).  There is probably a 2nd printing but if any AIL user has a copy (number line would have a '2'), please send me a JPG/Tiff image of cover as well as the copyright page.  Thank you (in advance).

03300 JOHN BRUNNER The Atlantic Abomination (cover by Emsh; c.1960; see below)

The Atlantic Abomination was originally published in ACE Double D-465 (1960) bound with David Grinnell's The Martian Missile. This edition uses the same Ed Emshwiller ("Emsh") cover art as found on the ACE Double.

(Thanks to Bill) there might be a way to control the date on this printing.  It appears that ACE Books changed the spine code from a '020' lead-in to '441' in August '69 and ceased printing the small editions in '70.  Thus this volume can be placed into that time interval.

03301 JOHN BRUNNER The Atlantic Abomination (c.1960; 1976)

There is a second printing with the same ACE Letter-Number series that is from 1977.

Babel-17 was originally published as ACE F-388 (1966). Nebula Award winning novel for 1966 (tied with DANIEL KEYES Flowers For Algernon). This edition uses the same cover art, but the cover text is slightly rearranged from the ACE F-388 edition. This is probably the 2nd ACE printing.  Probably one of my most favourite Delany tales, up there with Nova, Driftglass and Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones (yes, I am a mineralogist).

This is another TV tie-in noveliation. There appears to be a large number of these and I only have a few. If there are AIL users with this series, please send me some information.

Update: 07 May 2021.  An AIL contributor (Thank you Bill) has provided more insight into this series.  First, this is the ONLY ACE Book publication in the 'Battlestar Galatica' universe (thus, a true PBO).  There is supposed to be a reissue of the first one by Ace in 1985 with 05107-3.  So, if any AIL users have a copy of this edition, I would really appreciate a JPG/Tiff image of the cover (and back) art as well as the copyright page.  Thank you (in advance).  The remaining tales of the "Battlestar Galatica"saga were issued by Berkley, which later reissued so many titles on ACE after Putnam bought them. Details on the full original series can be found at this URL:

 https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.isfdb.org%2Fcgi-bin%2Fpe.cgi%3F2669&data=04%7C01%7Csmithms%40uncw.edu%7Cd77da1c1be4c4df6c5ea08d90f3ec671%7C2213678197534c75af2868a078871ebf%7C1%7C0%7C637557584589292833%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=o3sRmbB8j%2BCVyVGGKYiHG1EdxozKYZpwwc%2FWymySRYA%3D&reserved=0.

Of the original series the first 10 were novelizations of episodes but 11-14 were new.

Of course, the relaunch on TV generated a new series of books [four that I know of, all on TOR].  Lastly, in 1997 Richard Hatch, Apollo in the "Battlestar Galactica" series co-wrote seven new adventures, with the first two by Pocket Books and the remainder on iBooks.

07191-0 MICHAEL de LARRABEITI The Borribles (cover by Don Maitz; c.1979; 1982; June 1984; 3rd ACE printing; ACE Fantasy)

A very enjoyable and novel fantasy novel - one of my favourites.

MICHAEL de LARRABETI (1934-2008) was a novelist and travel writer whose Borribles trilogy of children's books was most noted in genre circles for the exhilaratingly uninhibited violence and language.

Note: the 1st ACE printing is ACE 07170-8 (1979). This edition is a bit out of letter-number sequence.

His writing career spanned thirty years and he is most remembered for one of his earliest stories, " The Girl in the Golden Atom" (c. 1919), as well as being one of the authors used by Gernsback in the early Amazing pulp magazine.

07895 ANDRE NORTON Breed to Come (c.1972; September 1973; 1st ACE printing and PBO)

There is a second printing of this Letter-Number series with the same cover art and price. This edition has no date, but if you look at the slug line on the 1st edition you will see it says “AN ACE BOOK” but the second printing only has “ACE”.  Furthermore, if you look  closely at the two scans, you can see where the slug line has been partially obliterated on the cover of the second printing.  Probably published in 1973.  (Thank you Bill for this information).
