Estimate includes:

*Roundtrip airfare from Wilmington or Raleigh to San José, Costa Rica
(payable to designated travel agent, Professor Jara will provide details later)

*Lodging in hotels.

*3 meals a day.

*All ground transportation.

* All cultural activities and excursions.

*Study abroad health insurance.

 *$225 UNCW non - refundable deposit. (Deposit is applied towards
    program cost
. Deposit will only be refunded if program is cancelled).

During orientations students will be advised about how much moneythey should bring for souvenirs, tips and other activities they might want to do on their own.

Itinerary

 

SAN JOSE & THE CENTRAL VALLEY:

Arrive in the central valley of Costa Rica, home to 80% of the country's population and surrounded by mountains. This area boasts fantastic vistas and a perfect climate.
 

TORTUGUERO:

Tortuguero National Park is located on the Caribbean coast.  At Tortuguero you will go on an evening beach walk in the National Park with the hopes of catching a glimpse of a nesting sea turtle. During the day, explore the local canals for wildlife, hike in the surrounding rain forest and visit the Turtle Museum in the town of Tortuguero.  In addition, help at a turtle conservation project for 2 days.

SARAPIQUI :
Enjoy whitewater rafting on the Sarapiqui River. Visit a community  involved in a project to improve the environment through reforestation and education. During your time here, you will participate in this reforestation effort and learn firsthand about rural Costa Rican life. 

MONTEVERDE:
Located close to the Pacific Coast, Monteverde is a magestic cloudforest that hosts a wild variety of wild life including a larga variety of butterflies and birds.  In Monteverde we will visit a butterfly farm, a cheese factory and go bird watching. Enjoy the rain forest and all the wildlife that inhabits in it. 

ARENAL VOLCANO:

Head to the town of La Fortuna at the base of the spectacular Arenal volcano. Relax in hot springs, fly through the forest canopy on a zip-line tour, take a horse ride to Fortuna Falls and visit an organic farm full of surprises. 

 

HEREDIA & THE CENTRAL VALLEY:
Enjoy the culture and art of the country in the country's capital of San José. Travel through history as we visit an old town that recreates life in the last century. Visit a coffee plantation, shop for souvenirs and enjoy a night of typical dance and music at Pueblo Antiguo.
