METHODS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH SOC 300
Summer 2003

DISCUSSION TOPIC 10: EXISTING DATA

Go to the websites below and identify three sources that you could use to study your research question or topic. You may have to modify your question a bit to "fit" a dataset available.  This is what happens in real life when you use existing data.  Be sure to identify the specific data you would use, not just the source of the data. For example with the GSS, identify the questions/variables you would use from the survey to answer your research question.

General Social Survey (GSS)

City-County Databook

Statistical Abstracts of the US

US Census

National Election Studies

University of Michigan Documents Center

University of NC Chapel Hill Institute for Research in Social Science (includes several links to datasets on NC)

World Bank

Environmental/Population Issues (also try http://csf.colorado.edu/wsystems/wsarch.html)

United Nations

Data on Europe (also try http://www.nsd.uib.no/cessda/europe.html)
