Course Description: This course will provide an overview of applied sociology. Drawing primarily on class discussions, students will learn how to apply sociological concepts, theories, and research methods to solve real-life questions and problems. The contexts in which these questions and problems will occur include, but are not limited to, inequality, education, business, religion, government, social service agencies, health care, aging and assisted living, criminal justice, and civic groups. We will pay particular attention to issues of social change, but will also cover more specific client-based questions and problems. The primary goals are to prepare you to 1) complete an internship or practicum in sociology, and 2) identify and obtain a job upon graduation.

Course Schedule:  Check this daily for schedule changes. I will revise the schedule as needed as we proceed through the semester.

Attendance: I will take attendance every class period.   I will use this data in the event of grade appeals.

Assignments and Projects: You have a total of 11 assignments and no exams.   The assignments include finding job ads, writing cover letters and resumes, finding abstracts for your literature review on your project topic, finding 5 articles on your topic, making a literature review spreadsheet, making a presentation on your project, and writing a proposal.  The job ads are worth 5% (5 points) each.  The first and second drafts of your resume and cover letter are worth 5% each (5 points each).  The abstracts, articles and spreadsheet are worth 5% (5 points) each.  The presentation is worth 10% (10 points).  The proposal sections are worth: Title page 5%, Introduction 5%, Organizational Profile 5%, Literature Review 15%, Methods/Goals 15% (total 45% or 45 points). All assignments should be typed, double-spaced and written in complete sentences with no spelling errors (exception: job ads, internship sites, literature review spreadsheet, presentations).

Grades: At the end of the semester, I will enter the above points into the following formula to calculate final points:

Final Grade = Job Ads1 (.05), + Job Ads2 (.05) + 1st Resume (.05) + 1st Cover Letter (.05) +  2nd Resume (.05) + 2nd Cover Letter (.05) + Abstracts (.05) + Articles (.05) + Spreadsheet (.05) + Presentation (.10) + Title Page (.05) + Introduction (.05) + Organizational Profile (.05) + Literature Review (.15) + Methods/Goals (.15)

Then I will record a final grade using the A-F point system below.
