HST 315, History of Modern Ireland |
The Irish people have a ready smile and a long history. We will follow the story of Ireland and its people through many eras; and they are many: the saintly and scholarly Early Middle Ages, the era of British ascendancy, the era of the actual British rule via plantations, the period of the Ulster Rising and Civil War, the harsh penal codes, the famine years, the decades of agitation over Home Rule, the 1916 rising, the divisive War of the Black and Tans, and the period of the independent republic and the six counties. Most recently the Troubles have been paramount, but the people and the country, ever hopeful, look toward a positive future. |
