SITES OF INTEREST

This course offers an examination of world history from the perspective of the sea.  It will cover the topics and the nations that address man’s interaction with the world’s oceans.

Over the centuries, the oceans have served as barriers, highways, sources of myth and danger, provider of food, inspiration to dreamers and poets, and venues of recreation, health and pleasure.

We will focus on activities of enormous impact such as commerce, war and migration, and the nations that participated in these activities, such as the Chinese, Japanese, Arabs, Vikings, Italians, Portuguese, Spanish, British, Dutch, Polynesians and Americans.  We will look at the ancient mariners, hearty discoverers, and modern sailors.
