JPN 201 Intermediate Japanese I
Fall 2018

Course Calendar
Revised 11/12/2018

This semester you will learn about Japanese geography, regional products for souvenirs, weather & climates of different regions, annual events, and more.  I hope you will find where and when you want to visit Japan in the future. We will review and strengthen your reading and writing skills. Later of the semester, you will have a chance to correspond with Japanese students in Japan.  So let's get ready for it!

*  Assignment Submission Requirements:
1.
Monday (recording):  As indicated in the calendar below, please turn in your recording of Key Sentences of the week before12:00 p.m. (at noon) on Monday and study the Grammar/Structure and practice reading the Key Sentences before the Tue. class.  I will quiz you about the grammar, which are a part of your participation grade of the week. It is very important that you study the grammar before you come to class so that aural/oral practices will be the focus in class. If you see a link highlighted in red, please practice with the video before you come to class.  Bring questions on grammar to the Tue. classes.

2.Wednesday (typed written assignments):  The assignments are explained at the Grammar sections of each chapter. The first draft of the assignment (double spaced, saved with assignment title and your name (E.g. Self-intro Smith or 1-1 A-F Smith") typed in MS Word) must be posted for your team member to give you a feedback by Tue. and give feedback to your team mate before12:00 p.m. (at noon) on Wednesday of the week unless other options are specified in the course calendar below.

3. Friday (hand-written assignments):  After reviewing and reflecting all the corrections and feedback from the instructor and the teammate on your first Wed. submission, the revised assignment must be hand-written and turned in as a final version of the assignment before12:00 p.m. (at noon) on Friday of the week to receive creditsThe hand written version should be also double-spaced with your name, assignment title, and date on each paper. The hand-written version can be also turned in by fax (World Language Department  fax # 910-962-7712 at UNCW. Please remember to write my name (Yoko Kano) on your assignment to show to whom your assignment should be sent.) , in-person, leaving it at the department mail box or the folders on my office door or the door in the hallway close to the Exit sign, or creating One PDF file (combine all the pages into one file please) and send it as UNCW e-mail attachment (No digital photo image of the assignment is accepted (I use "Genius Scan" app to take photo with smart phone, and it converts the image to PDF and mail it to your e-mail but UNCW e-mail may not accept it so send it to gmail or other e-mail and then forward it to your UNCW e-mail.).  Make sure you write your name on every pages and page number.  The grades for the assignments will be given to the final version each week.  In another words, the grade for the week's assignment is kept as "zero" until the final hand-written version is turned in.

 The late submission will result in losing ten points off (per working day) from the final grade of the week's assignment.  The grade of the week remains zero until the final handwriting versions (which are to be submitted on Fridays) are submitted.  Only the grades given to the final hand-writing version will be recorded. In other words, you can improve your grade by making corrections and revising the typed assignments (the grades may be given to the typed assignments) are temporal for you to understand where your grades stand as a reference.

After you finish all the submissions, please start learning the Grammar/Structure and practice reading the Key Sentences of the following week to get ready for the coming class.

Click here to see the grading criteria and codes on the writings.

All the turned-in assignment must be collected (and printed out if they are typed) and organized in a binder to be able to show or turn in whenever the instructor requests.

The first interview and its summary, "Interview 1 (due Nov. 27)"  is an assignments (10% of your grade) for you to practice for the take-home final exam.  Turn in a hand-written summary only, showing how many characters with the self-checked grammar list (link from the grading criteriaBe sure to refer to the grading criteria and go over and write check marks in the Grammar list before you turn it in.  Bring audio file (up to 15 min. each) and the typed Word file in a flash drive along with a hand written version to class.

Tips for successful Interview and summary writing:

Click here for Interview Tips (especially the useful phrases at the bottom of the page.)

Be sure to include the topics and grammar that we learned this semester. I am grading what you learned this semester.  Here are some topics.

The topics of Chapter 1 and 2: Their hometown. Where is it?  Describe the town.  Is the town famous for something?    Is there any specialty or souvenir in the town?  If there is nothing special about the town, ask their favorite Japanese cities/towns or places they want to visit, etc. and what they want for souvenirs from the town;
The topics of Chapter 3:  Ask about their experiences.  If they have not done so, ask if they would like to do it. Ask about their daily activities on weekends and weekdays.;
The topics of Chapter 4: Talk about Japanese annual events (at least 3 events) and/or seasons they like and list the events and season in the order they like.  Write what they do during the events and/or season.
The topics of Chapter 5 and 6: Weather, Climate, Seasonal & annual activities, and price of items.  Use structure such as Comparative & Superlative and -Te forms of adjectives (describing places, events, items, people, preferences, etc.)
Other topics of your choice:  You can include more topics of your choice to increase the volume of your writings but keep in mind that I am grading what you have learned this semester.

Again, refer to the grammar list in the grading criteria to check if you have used more than 90 % of newly learned grammar during this semester!

Good luck and have fun!

Suggestion to make your writing enjoyable for others to read.

It is such a joy to see how far you came along and improved your Japanese and that you enjoyed talking with your Japanese natives.  When I read the papers, it will be clear who enjoyed talking with a Japanese and who were too nervous about completing the final assignments.  Some students are writing the Interview summary mechanically, trying to include the grammar structures and topics while others purely enjoyed the friendship with the Japanese people and wrote about them with your empathy and thoughts about them.   It is obvious which case will help you write an enjoyable piece of writing.

I understand that some of your personality or the stress at the end of the semester (being shy? Or just trying to finish the course?) prevent you from enjoying this type of activity but if you show your interest in the person (vs. just trying to finish the requirements), you will enjoy it more and, in the end, your writing will be more enjoyable for others to read.  I understand that you cannot yet articulate in Japanese how you feel and what you are trying to say but please try your best.

I will be working in the office during the final exam week.  Come by and knock on the door (the lab will be closed after the last day of classes but I am open to meet students) or e-mail me before you come by (so that I will have the door unlocked or open a bit with a door stopper). J

It was great to work with y'all!!
