BONUS REPORTS

These will be reports which are typed with double-spacing and 12 pt font. You will be expected to use correct English grammar and punctuation. Do not just list the answers, but put everything into proper sentence and paragraph form. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE text from the Internet.  You should show that you have read and digested the material. All work that is not yours is supposed to be supported with a bibliography whenever write. Grades are typically given based upon proper, answering questions, and evidence of the effort made. The grades earned will be added to your total quiz points.

 

Bonus #1 Manhattan Project - Due May 26

  • What was the Manhattan Project?

  • Who were the key players in the project?

  • Who was the youngest (famous) physicist on the project?

  • When did the project take place?

  • Where was the project located?

  • What were the results of the project and how does this project impact the world today?

  • What data/facts did you find interesting?

  • What did you learn that you did not know before?

 

Bonus #2 Albert Einstein - Due June 4

  • 2005 was designated the World Year of Physics because of several papers Einstein wrote in 1905. What did Einstein work on a hundred years ago? 

  • What was his role in/opinion of the Manhattan Project?

  • What is general relativity? Describe some of the impacts of the Einstein's introduction of general relativity on today's perception of the universe.

  • Describe the effect his work had on some aspect of your field of study.

  • Read on some aspects of his life and report on what you found interesting and something you did not know about him.

Bonus #3 Physical Cosmology  - Due June 12

 

While answering the following, try to see how they are connected, who the key players were/are and how this is connected with physics.

  • What is physical cosmology?

  • What is the Big Bang and when did it take place? What proof is there for the Big Bang? In this context what is Cosmic Inflation?

  • What is the cosmic microwave background (CMBR)? When was it first discovered? Why is it important today? What were COBE and WMAP?

  • What are dark energy and dark matter? How are they related to the above?

  • What is the current state of understanding of the ultimate fate of the universe?
