Dr. Joanne Halls received her PhD in 1996 from the University of South Carolina. In 1999, she joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina - Wilmington Department of Geography and Geology. Her focus is the use of Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing to study coastal environments including habitat changes through time, animal distribution modeling, and land use development, hydrology, and water quality. Dr. Halls is the director of the Spatial Analysis Lab and Coordinator for the MS in Geoscience and the Certificate in Geographic Information Science.
Her research focuses on the development of geospatial technology for improving spatial modeling and spatio-temporal analysis of natural resources, coastal land use development, wildlife and habitat modeling, and marine ecosystems. Her regional area of interest is the coastal zone where she collaborates with ecologists, marine scientists, and geomorphologists to develop interdisciplinary models of the landscape.
