Linear components are the most basic elements of
textual design--the letters, words, numbers, and other "intra-level"
forms that are visible to the eye but are often taken for granted.
When thinking of linear components, it is important
to keep the following in mind:
- Readers frequently process messages one piece
at a time and therefore even small swatches of text can have
significant functional value. For example, a single
italicized word will stand out clearly in a line of type.
- Linked together, linear components have a
cumulative effect on the overall visual language of the
document. For example, the selection of a type style and
size can profoundly shape the texture of a page or screen.
