Contrast

Contrast is not just about Typeface, but also about color and visual design.  For contrast to make a difference or to be effective it must be a strong contrast.  If two elements are sorta different, but not really, then you don't have contrast, you have conflict.  The principle of contrast states that if two items are not exactly the same, then make them different.  Really different.
  • Large type vs small type
  • thin line vs. thick line
  • cool color with warm color
  • smooth texture with rough texture
  • horizontal vs. vertical element

Eyes like contrast.  The purpose of contrast is two-fold..  One purpose is to create an interest on the the page.  The other is to aid in the organization of the information.  Just remember to be effective contrast must be strong.

  • Today we will focus on typeface, type size, type as graphic (punctuation, background, color, shading), and treatments (bold, italics, and shadow).
