SAM: Completing Microsoft Office Units

Each of these Microsoft office units contains three individual parts and one capstone project for each application:
  • Read the appropriate e-Text/MindTap chapter as you did with the concepts chapters. The book is "New Perspectives Microsoft Office 365 & Office 2016 Introductory". This is a different book, so you may need to re-accept all of the licensing terms again. These chapters follow the concepts chapters in SAM, so you will need to look on subsequent pages of Readings to find them. Make sure the Section is set on All, the Type: Reading, and then look in the lower right corner for page numbers 1 2 3 4. Click on those to find the correct chapter. There are a few introductory chapters to the Office book which we covered in the orientation assignments. Feel free to review those as needed, but be sure you proceed on to the correct chapter, Word 1 to start, for the assignment.

  • Complete the SAM Path for the unit. You may recall from the Orientation Assignment that there are three parts to this:
    1. Pre-test: the complete set of skills for the unit. If you earn 100% on the Pre-test, your score for the SAM Path is 100%, and you do not need to do the additional training or post-test
    2. Training: This covers only the skills that you missed on the pre-test.
    3. Post-test: Also, only covering the skills you missed on the pre-test. Your SAM Path score will be the number correct from the post-test added to the number correct from the pre-test.

To find SAM Path Assignments, go to SAM Assignments, change the Assignment Type to SAM Path, and click the Search button.
For more details about SAM Paths, see http://people.uncw.edu/sethurama/SAM_Paths.html

  • Complete the Unit Quiz: These are similar to the concepts quizzes but contain only 25 questions. You have two attempts on each quiz.

  • Complete the Office 365/2016 Capstone Project for each application:
To find Microsoft Project Assignments, go to SAM Assignments, and change the Assignment Type to Project. Click the Search button to navigate to the appropriate chapter.

Capstone projects must be done in Office 365/2016 for Windows or Office 2016 for Mac. If you use any other version of Office, your project will not be scored properly.

You have five attempts for each project. Sometimes just one typo will deduct a lot of points. Don’t panic. It’s just part of a larger task. Review the report and proceed. Please view the following video about completing, submitting, and reviewing projects. It shows you how to download the graded project and see exactly what you missed so that you can revise it and resubmit: SAM-Student-Completing a Project
This video contains all of the information you need, so PLEASE view it in its entirety before asking questions.
Additional Tips for Macintosh Users:
  • When asked to press the Windows <Ctrl> key, do the following:
    • If you are using a Macintosh with an Apple keyboard, use the <Apple> (Command) key instead.
    • If you are using a Macintosh using a generic USB keyboard, you will generally use the <Ctrl> key, though on rare occasions the <Alt> key will be used for the same function.
  • When asked to click on the right button of a Windows mouse, do the following:
    • If you are using a single-button mouse or track pad, simultaneously press the <Ctrl> key and click at the same time.
    • If you are using a more recent MacBook that supports gestures, you can also touch the track pad with two fingers. Note that this needs to be activated in your System Preferences. Refer to Mac Instructions for further instructions.
    • If you are using a generic USB two-button mouse or track pad, use the right button as you would on Windows
  • Apple keyboards do not differentiate between the <Backspace> and <Delete> keys like Windows or generic USB keyboards. When asked to use <Backspace>, hold the <Function (fn)> key on the keyboard while pressing <Delete> key.

  • Right-clicking the trackpad works if it is configured in your System Preferences. Refer to Mac Instructions or look up what your particular computer needs.
Using Word 2016 on a Mac for the Word Capstone Project:
Step #7: To apply small caps, point the cursor to the top edge of the screen to display the menu. Select Tools/Customize Keyboard. From the Categories list choose Format and scroll down the list of Commands to find SmallCaps. Accept the default keyboard shortcut and press OK. Select the text to format in the document and press Command-Shift-K to apply the small caps font effect.
Step #14: Repeat the process from step 7 and accept the default Command-Shift-A for the AllCaps font effect. Then be sure to apply the effect using the keyboard shortcut in the document.
Step #25: From a Browser, go to bing.com/images to search for the image. Use copy and paste to insert the image.

Using Excel 2016 on a Mac for the Excel Capstone Project:
Step #21: Manually resize the column width to 1.96″

Using PowerPoint 2016 on a Mac for the PowerPoint Capstone Project:
Step #11: Trimming a video is not available in PPT 2016 for Mac. If you do the rest correctly, SAM will deduct 3 points for not trimming the video. Please send me an email, and I will adjust your score for that task.
Step#21: The shadow text effect can be applied from the Shape Format tab ->Text Options -> Text Effects. Any shadow effect may be chosen.
