Tribute Speech

As I stand here in front of my graduating class I would like to thank my brother Christian because without him I would not have been able to finish school at the top of my class and earn my scholarship for sports.  He has always been a great influence on me, as well as my role model.  Even though he is three years older than I, he has been my best friend from my very first memories.  He is my protector, he is my teacher, he is my conscience, he is my best friend and we still share those bonds. (anaphora)

Although I was not gifted as Christian is, I was never made to feel stupid.  When I was identified as having learning related panic attacks he never gave up on me.  He would teach me in ways I could learn, and encourage me to work hard and focus on each task.  He has such a gentle kind soul and the patience of a saint, but I learned young that on the field of competition he was a ferocious force to be reckoned with. (anthithesis).  We both have a passion for soccer and after class work was completed then our fun began.  We were equals on the field and all the frustration of life was let out as we played.  He taught me never to quit and to give all I had to give.  Soccer was another love we shared and a bond that held us even closer.  I grew up hearing that if it is important enough to play then play to win and never quit.

When Christian went off to college I felt lost at first and unsure of myself.  He stayed in touch and worked hard to keep me on the right track.  Every accomplishment was shared with him and his support gave me the belief in myself that made me able to succeed.  I remember his words the day he left, “No matter how hard the work, don’t quit. Even if you’re loosing the game, don’t quit, and if you really believe in someone or something, don’t quit.”  (epistrophe)

From this moment on life will be different for all of us.  Because of Christian I have learned to believe in myself and trust my instincts.  I learned from him that life will change.  Yesterday I was afraid of what the future would bring, yesterday I was afraid to leave the comfort of my home and venture into a new world, yesterday I was a scared little sister and today I am a confident young woman ready to face the world.  (parallelism)  You are still my big brother, and you are a teacher for are younger brother.  You could have been anything you chose, but you chose to teach and coach high school and I am thankful for all the other children that will be given the gift you gave me.  Thank-you Christian, because you are always at my side I have no fear.
