Telemarketing

Have you ever been at home and the phone rings, you pick it up and someone on the other end is soliciting money for and organization. Yes IТm talking about those sometime pests telemarketers. Most of the time these people are working for a larger professional fundraising firm. In which the gets anywhere from about eighty to eighty-five percent of the proceeds collected. Yes the organization that they are raising the funds for gets only twenty to fifteen percent of the money raised by them. I think that this defeats the purpose of having fund-raisers for organizations like the police, firefighters, veterans, etc.

What needs to be done about this problem is put more regulations on telemarketing and fundraising. There is a current law that prohibits policemen and firefighters from doing the fundraising themselves. ThatТs why they have to go out and hire a professional fundraising firm to do it for them. The organization has no choice and the telemarketing firms know this and take full advantage. All they are doing is making money by using an organizations worth while cause to make themselves richer and give the people a small portion of the pie.

I think that there should be a law that makes it where the organization gets most of the money raised instead of a professional telemarketing firm. For example, The police would get eighty percent or so and the telemarketing firm would get about twenty percent or so. After all thatТs the reason the money is being raised for not to make someone else richer. Fundraising could be better if these organizations would hire telemarketers directly instead of a professional firm. IТve worked with two different telemarketing places, one was a professional organization that kept eighty percent and the other that hired telemarketers directly. When an organization hires itТs telemarketers directly they are able to keep a larger portion of the funds collected instead of only getting a percent. All they would have to do is pay for overhead costs, telemarketers, etc, instead of letting someone else do it and get most of the money.

If better regulations were put on telemarketing and fundraising more people would be able to benefit. People wouldnТt have to worry how much of the money is going somewhere else other than the charity. People would also feel better about giving money when they receive phone solicitation, after all most people donТt have time to go door to door asking for money. If telemarketing goes on at the rate itТs going people will just stop giving and trying to help people in need. Mostly because their efforts to help is only making the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
