About
I come from a family of educators. Mom was an elementary school teacher, and Dad taught and coached at the high school I attended. Three of my four siblings have had long careers in education, and three of my four sons work or are preparing to work in education. To say education is my life is not an exaggeration.
I graduated from Kenyon College in 1970 with a degree in English and a professional basketball contract in hand. After my release from the Utah Stars, I coached basketball at Brandeis University but soon felt a real urge to do more, so I earned my MEd. From UMass Boston and began teaching/coaching in high school in 1975. My career would lead me to nine different schools from an exclusive boarding school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan to a small rural high school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I have taught in urban and suburban schools and have worked with students from every socio-economic background. Along the way I coached for 27 years, did additional graduate work at the University of Michigan, earned my National Boards, received numerous teaching awards and created/ran the AVID Program at Hoggard High School in Wilmington North Carolina. I retired from teaching to care for my wife of 40 years who died of ALS in 2011. Currently, I supervise English Teaching Interns for UNCW-WCE and teach English 2 and English 3 at the Adult High School on the Cape Fear Community College campus.
