Egyptian Absorption Exercise

In the computer lab, go to www.thebanmappingproject.com.  First look at the atlas for the Theban necropolis, and observe how thickly the mortuary tombs and temples are clustered.  When you’ve looked around there, go to the Valley of the Kings Atlas.  From there you can zoom into individual tombs and fly around.  Visit at least three tombs that you’re interested in, including KV-14, Tausert and Setnakht (because it’s got a particularly good 3-D tour).  Small and easily missed highlights include KV-62, Tutankhamon’s tomb, and KV-55, the Amarna cache, but you might want to look at some of the big, blockbuster tombs as well.

When you’ve looked at enough tombs, discuss with the people near you the following questions and answer them:

--Did actually seeing close-ups of the tombs change your perception of Ancient Egypt, and the New Kingdom in particular?

--Why was Egyptian culture technologically conservative?  Name some benefits and disadvantages of this conservatism.

--Why do you think the Sea Peoples attacked, and why were they so successful?
