A Spanish
graduate course will be offered on UNCW campus in Summer 2002 by John
Stevens: Spanish 495/595: Seminar in Spanish Dialectology (Social and
Geographic Varieties of Spanish).
This course will examine the historical, social, and cultural elements
represented in the dialectal diversity of the Spanish language. Students will
trace the evolution of Popular Latin into Modern Spanish and be provided with
the background necessary to understand and appreciate how and why the major
Spanish dialects of the Iberian Peninsula and of the New World have emerged.
Special emphasis will be placed on the linguistic, social, educational, and
political aspects of Spanish in the United States. The course will be conducted
entirely in Spanish. The only prerequisite is solid reading ability in Spanish.
Dues:
($10) may be paid at the meeting or sent to Josephine Brent: 1304 Heron
