HOW DO I DECLARE MY MAJOR?

After the second semester of your freshman year, you may declare a major.  Before the end of the second semester of your sophomore year, you must declare a major.  This may be done as you  prepare to leave the tutelage of the Student Academic Support Systems (General College) by asking that your records be transferred to the department of your chosen major.  Once your records have left SASS, you may change your major or declare a second major by going to the Registrar's Office in James Hall and filling out the appropriate forms.

If Spanish is to be your only major you will be assigned an academic advisor who is on the Spanish faculty.  If Spanish is to be a second major, your official advisor will be a faculty member in the discipline in which you have declared the "first major".  If you want your official advisor to be a Spanish professor, you should make sure that Spanish is listed as your FIRST major.  Even if you decide to leave Spanish as the second major, you should go to the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and request that an advisor be assigned to help you--monitor your progress, advise you about course and career options, etc.  Often the "first major" advisor is not knowledgeable about the intricacies of the second major.
