September meeting: Many thanks to Lizzy Pressley for her very interesting presentation on this past summer's trip to Irapuato, Mexico.  Thanks also to Denise DiPuccio for sharing a new FLL outreach initiative (see "Spanish Night at UNCW" below) as well as to all who participated in the teaching swap.

The ideas were great!   The attendance was at an all time high. Welcome to all the new members!

 

November meeting (coming up): Scheduled to present are Chuck Sterling (Careers with International Organizations from a World Bank Perspective), Julie Bordo (Latinos in North Carolina), and Irene Lucas (miniature piñatas – a craft demonstration that can be adapted for special days in all language classes).

 

Scholarships: UNCW Scholarship applications have been received; if there is time for the committee to consult and to notify recipients before the November meeting, we will introduce the recipients during the November meeting.

 

Refreshments committee for November: Joann Mount, Susan Crampton, Alice Rutter, Donna McGiboney.  Anyone else who wishes to contribute, please email or call Joann Mount.

 

Announcements and Special Events

Latino Week will be October 27-November 2, 2003.  Schedules and announcements of the week’s events have been sent to the CFFLC membership in separate mailings.  For more information, contact: Amigos International (910) 341-0007.  Events include: (1) Movie: "Lucía, Lucía," October 27-29,  Rated R.  Thalian Hall, Main stage. 7:30 p.m. $6.00 general admission.  (2) Movie: "El Norte," October 29, 6:30-9:30 UNCW (Morton Hall 100), admission free.  (3) Movie: "Central do Brazil," October 29, 6:30-9:30, UNCW (Lakeside 130), admission free.  (4) Festival Latino: Saturday, Nov. 1, Hugh MacRae Park, starting at 11:00. 

Spanish Night at UNCW: The UNCW Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will host a special "Spanish Night" for area school students.  Teachers of Spanish are encouraged to bring their students to this event, which is designed to familiarize them with UNCW and specifically to its Spanish and related programs.  Thursday, November 6, Warwick Center Ballroom, 7:00-9:00.  Program of scheduled activities has been sent to area schools.  Come and join the fun!  Important: RSVP to Dr. DiPuccio.  Faculty members of other languages at UNCW are planning nights for their respective languages.  Information to follow as soon as available.

Ballet Folklórico Quetzalli de Veracruz.
November 14, 8:00 p.m.  Thalian Hall. $14/$20.  (910) 343-3664 or (800) 523-2820.  One of Mexico's most popular cultural exports with its colorful displays of traditional dance and music from several regions of Mexico, including its own native Veracruz, birthplace of "La Bamba."

Graduate course for Spring:  Spanish 512.  Current Issues in Latin America through Film and Literature.  Dr. Peter Thomas. Tuesdays 6:00-8:45.
