Who should or should not take this course online?
There are typically two types of students who enroll in CSC 105.
The first type is the true computer novice - someone who has very little, if
any, experience with technology. The second type is a more experienced
computer user who seeks to acquire a more formal and professional approach to
computers. If you are in the first group, you may find that taking this course
online will be significantly more challenging than taking it in the
classroom.
·
You need access to a reliable computer with reliable
internet connectivity.
Computer/technical problems cannot be accepted as an excuse for
submitting something late.
·
Do you have the time for an online course? Taking a course online is neither easier nor
less of a time commitment than taking a traditional class.
·
Do you have the self-discipline and motivation
to keep up? In an online course, there
are not as many reminders about due dates and expectations as in a face-to-face
class. That responsibility falls on the
student. Be sure to check your e-mail
daily for new announcements, assignments, etc.
Also make sure that your e-mail box is not full, or messages will
bounce.
·
Be sure you are the type of student who can understand
and follow written directions. Not
everyone is good at this. Some people
are auditory learners who learn best when they can both hear and see the
material being presented. Not understanding the syllabus, not reading email
from the instructor, or not following instructions do not qualify students to
make up missed work.
·
If you tend to procrastinate or lose track of
deadlines, you should not take this course online.
