At our business
meeting at NCA (2005), we voted to establish a “John ‘Sam’ Keltner Inspiration Award” by raising $5,000 over the
next five years. The purpose of this award is to honor Sam’s memory as the
founder of our division and to recognize his work in promoting conflict
resolution through nonviolence over the last 60 years.
This endowment
will enable us to provide a monetary award to a graduate student for their
work in the area of peace and/or conflict studies based on their NCA
paper. Although not a requirement, special consideration will be given to
papers that follow Sam Keltner’s tradition of
bridging theory and practice. Between now and
NCA 2010, we must raise $5,000. With a division
membership of approximately 300, we are suggesting a minimum
tax-deductible gift of $25.00 from each member. It would be great if
everyone would bring a check to the PCCD business meeting so we can hand
them to our new Treasurer. Checks should be made payable to NCA/Peace
and Conflict. If you feel moved to send your check right away, please
mail it to 2006 Program Chair, Jessica Katz Jameson at: NC State
University Department of Communication CB
8104 World War II was
the catalyst for Sam Keltner in beginning his
life-long commitment to promoting and practicing non-violent conflict
resolution. As we move into the fourth of the Iraqi war, we are reminded
that Sam’s work is not done. To the extent that we can highlight work in
the peace and conflict area for our graduate students and colleagues in
NCA, we can continue the excellent work Sam began. Thank you to
everyone for your support! | |
