In this chapter, you will learn about the role and choices of operating systems used on today's computers.  This chapter also illustrates how to start and use application software and the advantages of software suites. You will discuss why the use of special needs software is important for K-12 schools.

l  Explain the role of an operating system and list the main operating systems used on today’s computers

Performance-based Assignment #4

  • Electronic Gradebook

Part I: Make an electronic grade book for your class!

·        You must make an electronic grade book for your (imaginary) class.  In doing this project, keep in mind the following criteria:

o   At least 15 students

o   At least 6 grades per student

o   Show the use of at least 1 formula

o   Show the use of at least 1 function

o   Save this project as "Gradebook."  This project must be saved on a flash drive within a folder named "Unit 4.”

·        Compare the scores of an individual student with that of the entire class through the use of a graph (use the Chart Wizard!)

o   Copy & paste the graph into a MS Word document, and include a detailed paragraph to a parent describing what the graph represents (a progress statement).

o   Save this project as "Progress Report."  This project must be saved on a flash drive within a folder named "Unit 4.”

Part II: Use a second MS Word document to develop and describe two lesson ideas that integrate the use of a spreadsheet in your curriculum area.

·        Each lesson description should be at least one paragraph (probably two) in length.

·        Each lesson description should include the grade level, the classroom topic to be covered, a summary of how you will teach the lesson, a summary of what students are being asked to learn, and a description of the assessment measure.

·        For Example: In 8th grade social studies we will create a spreadsheet and to input and compare data from all three sections of North Carolina.

·        Save this document as “Lesson Ideas.”

Part III: Open TaskStream and share the Spreadsheet Assignment with Dr. Kubasko as the reviewer.

  • Use the Lesson Builder and select the format: Activity/Lesson Log (quick form)

  • Add the activity details (see Parts 1 and 2 above)

  • Attach the ISTE NETS-T standards (see the standards listed in the EDN 303 "Assignment" web page above).

  • Attach both the word documents and the excel spreadsheet to the Assessment link

  • Request feedback (share with reviewer) from Dr. Kubasko
