  1. Refer to the Technology links page: Using the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Website, determine what the acronym NAEP means and describe why it is important to know.

·         NAEP: National Assessment of Educational Progress. Also known as the "Nation's Report Card," NAEP assesses the educational achievement of elementary and secondary students in various subject areas. It provides the best data for comparing the performance of students in North Carolina to that of their peers across the nation.

  1. Summarize NETS- T standard VI of the Social, Ethical, Legal, and Human Issues.

  1. Using NCPublicSchools.org and linking to the No Child Left Behind FAQ page, copy the answer to how Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is determined in North Carolina and whether or not a school makes it?

·         AYP measures the yearly progress toward achieving grade level performance for each student group in reading and mathematics. Schools must test at least 95 percent of students in each group and each group must meet the targeted proficiency goal in reading and mathematics in order to make AYP. Student groups are: 1) the School as a Whole; 2) White; 3) Black; 4) Hispanic; 5) Native American; 6) Asian; 7) Multiracial; 8) Economically Disadvantaged Students; 9) Limited English Proficient Students; and 10) Students With Disabilities. If just one student group in one subject at a school does not meet the targeted proficiency goal with a confidence interval applied to account for sampling error, then the school does not make AYP for that year. There is some flexibility for the Students With Disabilities student group for 2004-05 AYP calculations. See the next question and answer.

·         http://www.cbi.umn.edu/exhibits/cb.html

·         In 1821 Babbage invented the Difference Engine to compile mathematical tables. On completing it in 1832, he conceived the idea of a better machine that could perform not just one mathematical task but any kind of calculation. This was the Analytical Engine (1856), which was intended as a general symbol manipulator, and had some of the characteristics of today’s computers.

  1. There are many stories about how the computer came into being, but the most exciting story is that of the ENIAC. What was the date the ENIAC became obsolete?

·         On June 5, 1943, the Ordnance Department signed a new contract with the Moore School of Electrical Engineering to research, design, and build an electronic numerical integrator and computer -- ENIAC.

·         At 11:45 PM on October 2, 1955 -- almost ten years after its dedication, the Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer was shut down.
