You are volunteering at a day care center in Japan.  The caretakers are preparing birthday gifts for the kids.  Listen to the conversation and fill in the names and their birthdays to help them organize gifts at the beginning of the year.  Useful Phrase:  Calling kids names in Japan, they say kid’s fist name+ ちゃん for girls, and kid’s fist name+ くん for boys. 

かいわ　れんしゅう

1. Let’s practice the date.  Have one person tell the dates.  The rest of the people point the dates in the calendar.

2. Go around the class and collect classmates brithdays.  What months have the most number of birthday in your class?  Was anyone born on the same day?

3. Work with a partner and assign Person A and B.  Suppose, you know the following people’s birthdays.  Find out the unknown birthdays of people in the chart and write them down.  You can add more people such as classmates, family, and friends to practice dates.

4.     When is the good day?

You are planning to spend a day together next month.  In the calendar below, O （まる）indicates a good day.   X （ばつ）indicates a bad day. Find all possible good dates for both of you.  

Useful phrase:　today　今日 　きょう、tomorrow　明日　あした、the after tomorrow　あさって、 this week　今週　こんしゅう、next week　来週　らいしゅう、all right, fine, good　大丈夫　だいじょうぶ、how どう、good, nice, fineいい、hesitation noise to imply inconvenience　ちょっと…

Tips: Echo the dates you are asked about to fill in the conversation or to take some time to check. Echo question can be made by adding ですか to a topic or a relevant noun in the question.

A: 明日、(１日は)大丈夫ですか。Tomorrow, as for the first (of the month), all right?
B: 明日ですか。(Or１日ですか。)… 大丈夫ですよ。Tomorrow?  (The first?)  OK.

A: あさって、(２日は、)どうですか。The day after tomorrow, as for the second (of the month), how about (it)?
B: あさってですか。(Or 2日ですか)。大丈夫ですよ。 The day after tomorrow?  (The second?)  OK.

A: 今週の金曜日、(4日は、)いいですか。This Friday, as for the forth (of the month), good?
B: 今週の金曜日ですか。(Or 4日ですか)。いいですよ。This Friday? (Fourth?) OK.

A: 20日は、どうですか。How about 20?
B: 20日ですか。　いいですよ。(Or 大丈夫ですよ)。20^th?  OK.

5.     World Weather and Temperature

Person A: You won a trip around the world for a month!  Tell your friend where you will be on certain day.  Your fiend will tell you the weather and temperature on the date, please respond with your impression of the day. 
Person B: Your friend won a trip around the world. Ask where they will be on certain day.  Suppose, you checked the world weather forecast and their day-time temperatures.  Tell your friend what the weather is and temperatures.     

Useful phrases: weather 天気　てんき、 temperature　気温　きおん、Clear, fine dayはれ、Cloudyくもり、Rainあめ、Clear then Cloudy はれ　のち　くもり、　Cloudy then rainくもり　のち　あめ、Snowゆき、°C　摂氏　せっし、°F　華氏　かし

A: 明日は、イギリスです。Tomorrow is United Kington (UK).
B: イギリスの天気は曇りです。気温は32度（or かし32度です）。UK’s weather is cloudy.  The temperature is 32 degree.
A: 寒いですね。(Refer to the Weather in the Useful Phrases.) (It is) cold.  (ね in falling intonation shows empathy.)
B: そうですね。Agree.  (ね in falling intonation shows empathy.)

 Note: When you talk with a people used to metric or Celsius systems, you need to convert a number to an appropriate units.

5.     Today’s Special Dishes at a Guest House

You are helping at a front desk of a Japanese guest house which serves breakfast and dinner.  A guest, just leaving for a field trip, asks you what is a day’s special.  Tell them what will be the special food on the dates asked.

Pick the dates randomly and ask about the special dishes of the day. 

Useful phrase:  Breakfast (B) あさごはん,  Dinner (D) ばんごはん, what (is it)?  なんですか, Have a good day (direct translation: Please go and come back.) いって(い)らっしゃい。,  (Direct translation: I am going and coming back.) いってきます。

A guest: 11日のあさごはんは　なんですか。What is the breakfast of 11^th?
Front desk: 11日ですか。(Refer to an echo in the above practice.)  スクランブルエッグです。11^th?  Scrambled eggs.
A guest:　あ、どうも。Thanks.
Front desk:　いいえ。いってらっしゃい。No problem.  Have a good day.
A guest: いってきます。See you.
