Te-form of (action/motion) verbs + います/いる This structure expresses an action in progress. います/いる functions as an auxiliary verb with an action/motion verb as a main verb.  Affirmative or negative and present or past are expressed by changing います/いる.

私は一年と三ヶ月間日本語を勉強しています。　I have been studying Japanese for one year and three months.
私は、三年前の秋から大学に通（かよ）っていますから、三年半（はん）ぐらい一人でアパートに住んでいます。Since I have been (enrolled at and) going to the university since fall, three years ago, I have been living by myself (alone) for three and half years.  (Note: If  半 is used, 間 is dropped.)

私は、一年前から日本語を勉強しています。I have been studying Japanese since a year ago.

私は、今年の五月から日本語を勉強しています。I have been studying Japanese since this May.

デパートで山田さんはズボンを買っていました。
