I think that ...　...と思います。

思いますmeans “to think.” The English equivalent of と is “that.”  とis a quotation indicator.

 

Note: We have learned this usage of と in one of the classroom instructions.   “Book” は、日本語で「本」といいます。“Book” is called/said 「hon」  in Japanese. 

 

 

Noun + だnon-past /だったpast	+ と思います Note: 思いますis not made into past and/or form. Past and/or negatives are indicated before思います.
な-adjective + だnon-past /だったpast
い-adjective  ( いnon-past /かったpast  ending)
non-past /past Plain form of verb

その人は、日本人だと思います。(I ) think that person is Japanese.
その人は、日本人じゃないと思います。(I ) do not think that person is Japanese.

昨日来た人は、田中さんだったと思います。(I ) think that the person who came yesterday was Tanaka-san.

昨日田中さんが来たと思います。(I ) think that Tanaka-san came yesterday.

 

今、小姑が同居しているので、大変だと思います。
*(大変) is なadjective.
